No, but I do think the low notes at times sound like an oboe. I love that sound.
Atomic Flutist
I made the time last night to do the AF with Vic on YouTube. I think the video was from about 2 weeks ago. We did "brrrr" with our lips and for the life of me, my sound kept shutting down because of tension. I finally figured it out. We did long tones and octave slurs and I started to really see and feel my jaw and lips in the process. Tiny movements but they are there. Last one were high notes but focusing on frown vs smile muscles just to see the difference. I really enjoyed the 20+ min of freedom just messing around with my flute. Thanks, Vic!
Teach Us Something💯💯💯
This group is not just about me teaching what I've learned... It's about us sharing what we've learned and supporting each other! Let's start a trend of teaching each other. What's something that you learned in your life, maybe even outside of music, that is helpful to your improv journey? Next, go share your unique voice in the INTROS CONTEST (and get a chance to win a private duet session with me!) and vote on your favorite!

Hi Everyone - I'm about 24d late coming here, but it's something I noticed at lunch today. Mind you - I'm reading lead sheets and quizzing myself on chords, scale tones, etc. Today I saw that BbMaj7 chord and BMaj7 chords are spelled: Bb D F A and B D# F# A#. So I went hmmmm and did GMaj7 and GbMaj7 : G B D F# and Gb Bb Db F. Right now I'm calling it the on/off principle. DMaj7 and DbMaj7 (D F# A C# and Db F Ab C). I don't know if I have dyslexia or just had a stroke, but this is suddenly coming into view, which tells me I'm making more progress. Not sure if this will help anyone, but I had to post it here. Happy Thursday!
💊My PRESCRIPTION for IMPROVING IMPROVISING (in 10 min/day!)
Q. How many min a day do you have to practice? My Prescription for beginning to improve your improvising in 3-10 min a day: 🎤 Minute 1: Record yourself playing "Anyway Up" & "Anyway Down" by choosing a scale and improvising your way up & down the scale! This should only take about 30 sec. 🎧Then listen to your recording!🎧 Write: ✅ 1) One Thing You Liked! ⭕2) One Thing You'd like to improve... 🎵 Minute 2: Turn on a drone and record a "KISS" (stupidly simple) 30 sec free improv.🎧Listen to your recording!🎧 Write: ✅ 1) One Thing You Liked! ⭕ 2) One Thing You'd like to improve... 🎶 Minute 3: Record a 30-sec improv with the I-V chord progression backing track. 🎧& Listen!🎧 Write: ✅ 1) One Thing You Liked! ⭕ 2) One Thing You'd like to improve... The only ways to fail at this are to fail to write down what you liked and to fail to start! Post your recordings for support! This is for solidarity, not critique (unless you want it!). You're not alone!

Doable. I'm already practicing my scales with a drone, so I'll remember to do the 30 sec improvs tonight. Thanks for reminding of us of this.

@Sheri Hudgins LOL (hee hee) well...you have until May 16, 2026 to train for it!! I am trying to train for those hills with stairmasters and treadmills because I know the snow will keep me indoors in January. Congrats on your 10k!! That distance is my favorite as I age and it's no laughing matter. 5k's are awesome, too!!

@Sheri Hudgins This year I tried 4 min run/1min walk regiment for my longer races and didn't ache as much the next day. I won't PR, but I know I can enjoy it. Your turkey trot will be fun (and warmer?). At least we are working on our breathing when we run. Supports our flute!

Amateur flutist in overdrive. I don't really "need" to learn that section from "Peter and the Wolf" but I will consider it as jazzy etude...
