Caring for What Reaches Our Kitchen
A few carrots left in the refrigerator can be easy to overlook. We bought them with a meal in mind, plans changed, and now they need our attention. Earlier, we followed food backward to the places and people behind it. That same attention can also help us decide what to do next. Those carrots carry more than their purchase price. Soil, water, growing time, human work, transportation, and our own household effort helped bring them into the kitchen. Stewardship gives that awareness a practical expression. We recognize what has gone into something and consider how to care for it and use it well. That might mean planning a meal around an ingredient we already have, buying an amount that better fits our household, or asking a grower about something we do not understand. The useful choice depends on our time, budget, access, and ability. Food from a grocery store deserves our care just as food from our own garden does. Knowing where a food came from and deciding how to care for it are connected steps. One helps us see the relationship while the other gives us a place to participate. This week, choose one ingredient already in your kitchen. Notice what you know about the work and resources behind it, then choose one manageable action that helps you use it thoughtfully. What is one food you have learned to value more after understanding the work behind it? Which action would fit your household best this week?

I went to a coffee plantation in El Salvador and coffee is very labor intensive to pick and produce. I never complain when I pay a lot for coffee. It's a miracle it even gets to us.
Flea Infestation
This is the first time I've had a flea Infestation. Our family rescued kittens 2 months ago and somehow they're covered in fleas. We used dawn dish soap to carefully clean them a few times. My guess is when I let them outside a few times to visit with their mother she infected them. So we are implementing a long term plan to get them down on the property and out of the house. Curious if any of you have used Ecomask Spray with beneficial nematodes that contains the species Steinernema carpocapsae? To eradicate from soil.

@Jim Flach My 4 cats are all over 8 years old so I wouldn't try a new flea medicine on them.
Before We Plant, Let's Understand the Land
When we acquire a new piece of property, or even begin turning our front yard into a productive foodscape, it's natural to start imagining where the gardens, fruit trees, food forests, and other features might go. But before making those decisions, we need to understand what is already happening on the land. Sunlight, water movement, soil conditions, slope, and existing vegetation all influence how we develop a design with permaculture in mind. When I begin planning a property, I use different software tools to help map existing conditions and explore design possibilities. I've been looking more closely at which tools are best suited for this process. Photo-editing programs such as PaintShop Pro and Adobe Photoshop primarily use raster graphics (pixels), while vector-based drawing programs work with editable lines, shapes, and objects. For property planning, being able to draw accurately to scale is especially important. Ideally, design software would allow us to: - Map property boundaries, buildings, fences, and existing trees. - Draw garden beds and walkways to actual dimensions. - Use separate layers for water flow, sunlight, soil conditions, and access. - Plan mature tree canopies, plant spacing, and guild arrangements. - Add measurements, labels, and printable plans. - Update the design as the landscape develops over time. The ability to visualize a property in both 2D and 3D would be another useful feature. I'm curious what others are using. Have you used software to plan your garden, foodscape, or homestead? What software did you use, and what have you found helpful or limiting about it?

@Jim Flach I'm on a half acre but it's very wooded so lots of shade. My method is usually to buy some wild flower seeds, toss them on the ground, put some soil on top, and see what happens! I will boast about my asters from a cutting a friend gave me!
