Investigating Emotions: Comfort
Thanks, Viktor, for the video and exercises! I'll let you know if anything comes up 👍 "Notice the constant drive to be comfortable. Do not ignore it, judge it, or make it wrong. Just see it as part of your experience. Watch how it shows up in your body, your choices, your relationships, your work, and your inner life. Then ask yourself: "How would my experience change if I did not care about comfort at all? How would my pursuit of truth change?" You do not have to become uncomfortable. Just see what becomes available when comfort is no longer the issue." Notice - if you only pursue comfort, what would happen? What happens in your career if you only pursue comfort? What happens in your relationships if you only pursue comfort? What happens in your life if you only pursue comfort?"

I feel like I'm always persuing comfort. Even when I choose to do something uncomfortable it's because I think it will bring me comfort in the future.

@Robert David yes I guess that is true and of course much of the discomfort is created by the story of what is happening and not the actual situation. The work is remembering to break the pattern
Are emotions a form of thought?
There is an insight I'd like to discuss with you guys! I've been contemplating Emotion recently. Not individual emotions, but the entire domain: What is Emotion? What is the stuff it is made of? Does it have a connection with the body? I was influenced by this idea from somatic psychology that emotions show up in the body, and so, I took them to be more real than thoughts. I took this idea literally. I thought: "Hmm, the body is an object, and if emotions show up in the body, then they must be as real as the objects. Maybe that's how the movement of the hormones feels!" Suddenly, it occurred to me that emotions are a type of thought! They are nowhere - not in the walls of the room, nor does my stomach suddenly change colour when I get angry or happy. They seem to influence the body, but so do verbal thoughts. Just like verbal thoughts are viewed as happening in the head, emotions are viewed as happening in different areas of the body. That connection is a belief! So, there are different types of thought: inner voice, remembering, staging a scene, creating images, knowing how a door works, and... emotion! I'm curious about your feedback on my contemplation. Is there anything I'm not seeing?

I have read and it feels true in my experience that emotions and thoughts are a kind of programming and how we react to a situation depends heavily on how we have been conditioned throughout life and what we are attached to. These seem to be geared to keeping the body alive by seeking control or approval. There is more work being done with regard to the body "storing" emotions that are not expressed or let go, like a physical memory, sometimes creating physical symptoms. "The body keeps score" is a book I found interesting. There seems to be an uprising in somatic therapy which releases these without the need for analysing your past. Gabor Maté has also done work in this field. I wonder what you would have experienced if you had allowed yourself to cry? Some kind of release or relief maybe? Repeated movements in autism is said to provide sensory feedback. It seems to me to function in the same way as eating too much or binge watching TV after a hard day. Finding comfort in familiar patterns. I have been reading zen body being and have noticed that there are parts of my body that have little or no sensation . I seem to have a heightened awareness of how my body reacts to a violent scene on the TV. It make me curious.

@Lilia Hrabar I think (and this could just be a belief) the body has an intelligence so if it wants to rock let it if it is safe to do so. Sometimes I find things overwhelming and i think this could be a current event reminding me of a past situation that I was unable to handle, other times it feels like a connection to pure beauty like a sunset or what seems to be the " free spirit" of an animal.
In case you missed the latest community session on emotions and more
We did work on emotions and understanding how we add good and bad to our experience in the latest community session. It was powerful.

I find that I am afraid of the sensation of fear. It is quite strange that I am manipulated via patterns of behaviour just to avoid a physical sensation of a constriction in my belly and chest area, which when witnessed is not even painful.
Perception of objects
Before my phone decided it wasn't playing, I was listening to talk about the nature of objects. I remembered that the perception of what is, is limited by our sense "organs(?)". If a bee was looking at the table it would see something very different, or if I had electron microscopes for eyes I would see it as molecules. Is it actually possible to see anything as it is or is the point to realise that we never can?

The Brilliant Workshop
I just want to express my deep gratitude to everybody I met and got to know yesterday in the Ending Suffering workshop. I had an insight into the nature of thought - it’s an Activity, and it’s made up!!! I’ve heard that a million times, and yesterday, I got that for myself. So now I’m exploring what this new freedom entails, and I’m so excited. The way everybody communicated, and the spirit of the work were strikingly different from any other setting I have experienced. Special thanks to @Brendan Lea for your skilful facilitation and the team for making it possible. I feel so proud to be part of this.
