🔥 New piece out! — The Parasympathetic Theory of Thermic Bathing 🔥
Hey everyone! I just published an article that’s close to the heart of how I think about why heat actually heals — and I’d love to hear what this community thinks. 👉 The Parasympathetic Theory of Thermic BathingIn short: heat only becomes regenerative when the nervous system feels safe enough to let go. It’s not about hotter or longer — it’s about restful surrender into the heat. I explore how traditions from sweat lodges to onsen all tap into this same pathway, and why safety is the real medicine of thermic practice. Read here: https://thermaculture.substack.com/p/the-parasympathetic-theory-of-thermic Would love to get your thoughts and reflections — especially from folks who’ve witnessed the difference between heat as challenge vs. heat as restoration. Let’s discuss! 🧖‍♂️💬

“ Because practices drift toward spectacle when their purpose isn’t clearly articulated.” 🔥Love this piece and perspective so much. I’ve shared with our team and (with your permission) would like to quote you for a piece on our socials. From an operators lens, do you have any practices or techniques that help people feel safe in a communal setting that isn’t structured as a session (rolling start times v. guided sessions)? This is something that has been on my mind a lot as many of our guests are experiencing something like this for the first time and are often nervous/anxious when they arrive.
New Steam Standard?
Just caught this video from a recent Sauna Day customer showing the steam room and saunas at @Roshelle Ritzenthaler’s new Madison hot spot. So many things to discuss here but the Hammam style steam room really jumped out at me… anyone seen anything like this before in North America? Wow, suddenly really looking forward to my next college reunion in Madison! https://www.instagram.com/reel/DPRofw3EaEN/?igsh=MTk3Y2kybHY5NzVrNA==

Ha! 😂😂 Thank you so much! Would love to have you all! We dial in our steam room at a lower temp (~100F), have a central hot “belly stone” that feels super amazing to layout on, and cool water basins around the edges to continuously rinse off in. Add in the Hammam Kits that we’re sourcing from Adagir, Morocco—and it’s like a self applied Hammam scrub down. People are super comfortable in this space—sometimes too comfortable, gets a lil crowded 😅 …and a few others wish we had a HOT steam room like more tradition US steam rooms. But I’m happy with how it turned out—just wish I would’ve splurged on the marine speaker system in there…maybe someday.
Sauna Skool Summer Reading
I had the honor of presenting at Finn Fest last week with my good friend from Sauna Times Glenn Auerbach as well as the GOAT himself, Mikkel Aaland, whose book Sweat inspired my approach to thermic bathing and career. We geeked out on all things sauna and contrast therapy and I left the conference buzzing with content ideas for Sauna Skool. What books/movies are on your summer A-list for Sauna Skool nerds?

Love this, just added a couple new titles to my bookshop cart! One sauna related and one not. The first is The Architecture of Bathing—I love diving into different chapters when I get a free moment. The second is Let Them…because Im looking for strategies to personally deal with all the criticism I’m getting now that Saunaday is finally open—too hot/cold, not hot/cold enough, not accessible/not luxurious enough, no hot tubs (?)…some sauna enthusiasts can be hard to please, and I’m seeking my sanity! 😅

Sauna High?
Just posted this on Instagram… How do you describe the state change YOU experience after sauna and cold plunging?

Love this conversation, and it’s timely for us…working on a little chalkboard sign for the front of our bathhouse because we’re directly on well used bike path (LOVE!) but I’ve seen a couple of saunabathers almost get clipped 😅…was thinking something like “take caution, blissed-out sauna bathers crossing”
