Welcome to Thermaculture Sauna Skool šŸ”„ā„ļø
Before we get into lessons, language, or techniques, I wanted to start here—with a new simple introduction. This short video explains why Thermaculture exists, what it’s pointing toward, and what this Skool is really for. Thermaculture isn’t about performing sauna culture or chasing some ideal of authenticity. It’s about translation—understanding how humans have used heat, cold, rest, and contrast for thousands of years, and learning how to practice that wisdom where you actually live. If sauna has ever felt like more than a habit to you— If you’ve sensed that it reliably changes your state in a way that’s hard to explain— You’re in the right place. Watch the video when you have a quiet moment. No rush. Then, if you’re up for it, drop a comment below and share: What first drew you to sauna—or what made it start to feel like something more than just heat? I’m really glad you’re here. —John

šŸ”„ New piece out! — The Parasympathetic Theory of Thermic Bathing šŸ”„
Hey everyone! I just published an article that’s close to the heart of how I think about why heat actually heals — and I’d love to hear what this community thinks. šŸ‘‰ The Parasympathetic Theory of Thermic BathingIn short: heat only becomes regenerative when the nervous system feels safe enough to let go. It’s not about hotter or longer — it’s about restful surrender into the heat. I explore how traditions from sweat lodges to onsen all tap into this same pathway, and why safety is the real medicine of thermic practice. Read here: https://thermaculture.substack.com/p/the-parasympathetic-theory-of-thermic Would love to get your thoughts and reflections — especially from folks who’ve witnessed the difference between heat as challenge vs. heat as restoration. Let’s discuss! šŸ§–ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ’¬

@Phil Britton absolutely, Phil! So true... Great point! I think that's the point where the Principle of Participatory Preservation comes in... ie where the experience needs to be practiced with real earnest and informed and experienced discernment, which is—I argue—one of the most fundamental components of lasting and effective thermic bathing traditions: https://www.skool.com/thermaculture-8911/classroom/3ea8a782?md=2e438c46831142d18009e8a1b8900d71

@Scott Anderson geat questions, Scott. Sounds like you have some medical background? Stoked to have you in the group. Would love to get your thoughts on HRV as an interesting and useful metric for contrast therapy…
ā€œWhen the going gets tough…
… the tough get thermacating.ā€ That’s the saying—right?! šŸ˜œšŸ”„ Deployable within 72 hours to a storage closet near you (for under $100): https://a.co/d/eBX7A7n (I have tried dozens of combos throughout my Years of Living Thermically—and this exact tent size + steamer power (ie 1500 watt) combo is the MVP… IMO šŸ¤“.) Merry Christmas! New article just dropped on Substack šŸ‘‡
New article just dropped on Substack šŸ‘‡ I just published a new piece called ā€œNordic Cosplayā€, and it’s something I’ve been wanting to name clearly for a while. It’s about what happens when sauna turns into an aesthetic instead of a practice — when imitation replaces translation, and performance quietly displaces the medicine. This isn’t a takedown of Nordic sauna traditions. It’s a defense of them. More importantly, it’s a call to do the harder work here in North America: not copying forms, but understanding why they worked — and building practices that actually belong in our bodies, lives, and communities. If you’ve ever felt that something in modern ā€œwellness saunaā€ feels impressive but oddly hollow, this piece is for you. šŸ‘‰ Read it here: https://open.substack.com/pub/thermaculture/p/nordic-cosplay-and-the-myth-of-authentic?r=alzbt&utm_medium=ios If you read it, I’d love to hear: - What landed - What pushed back - Or where you’ve seen ā€œcosplayā€ show up in your own sauna experiences This idea is going to keep showing up in the Guide and in how we think about practice together, so your reflections really matter. — John

First Chapters Are Live — Would Love Your Input
I’ve just posted a draft of the first few chapters of the classroom material here in Sauna School. This is early-stage on purpose. I’d love for you to try it in real life—bring it into your next sauna session, see what lands, what feels clear, what feels confusing, or what feels especially alive. If anything stands out (good or not), I’d really value your feedback. A sentence or two is perfect. Even ā€œthis changed how my session feltā€ is helpful. This work gets better when it’s tested on the bench, not just on the page. Thanks for helping shape it!

@Margie Weaver thanks Margie that’s all super valid and super helpful! Ps did you see the shout-out to the Orphan Wisdom School in the How it Started section? Would love any suggestions on how to unpack that more wherever it might be relevant and helpful. Your influence and intro to that was hugely influential in my direction in the sauna world and this community…
