Surfing progression questions ā‰ļøšŸŒŠ
What questions do you have about getting better in your surfing? Perfecting the pop up, barrel riding, picking the right board are some that come to the top for me. When you show up to the beach what is running through your mind? We will be planning out some video courses with @Mark McLaughlin this year and wanted to try and answer the questions you have. I want to make sure we answer most, if not all the questions you have. As always, thanks for any and all feedback!

@Leason Dancaescu I got a lot out of jumping on a Carver and working on successively tighter turn lines while using cones. There is a lot of similarity in the action of drawing a line on a surf skate and drawing lines on a wave. It isn't perfect, but you can do it in the street, at a park, in an empty parking lot.. I also take mine to the local pump track and just work on getting laps in. Great way to get in a leg day, without the gym.

@Luis Gutierrez I range between 195-200 and I ride a 5'11" Machado Too Fish. I am in my early 50's. You could go with 6'0" - 6'2" on a Too Fish and have a blast. Alternately, You could go with the newer collab between Taylor Jensen and Stu Kinson (TJ Twinzer). That board starts at 6'8" but it will definitely give you the volume you need and a totally different set of lines when you surf.
Surf Space meet ups šŸ„ā€ā™‚ļøšŸŒŠā‰ļø Anyone in LA?
One of our members @Hodge Patterson is getting back into surfing after an injury and asked if anyone knows of any groups in LA to meet up to surf? Hit him up if you know of anything. That brings me to a question, anyone interested to plan a Surf Space community meet up from this group? @Anton Anderson @Luis Gutierrez @Bob Pinard @Damien Hobgood @Bryan Seshun Would be down for one in San Diego on a Saturday morning. Would be fun to meet folks who are new to Surf Space!

I'll surf anywhere from OB up to Church for a day trip. Just drop the plan with a little advance notice.
Perfect Pop Up Video šŸ„ā€ā™‚ļø
Just shared this video with @Joe Sigurdson who wants to improve his pop up. I suggested dry land pop ups at home before he surfs to loosen him up. Game changer! Check out this pop up video by Marcelo Castellanos, a friend of mine who trains pros in El Salvador. Best pop up video I know of:

The number of times I have shared the wisdom of the last part of this video with people in the water is staggering. Hand placement and head position as you pop can make or break your ability to get into a wave. So many people are so afraid of pearling that they slide too far back on their board, and then they put their hands too far forward. The result is a triangle with the majority of their weight on the tail of the board. Inevitably, they rush to get up, remove the pressure from their hands too early, and the nose of the board goes straight up in the air as they fall off the back of the wave. If they learn to move forward on the board, get those hands behind the shoulder (next to the ribs) and keep the pressure on their hands long enough for their feet to travel, it forces their body to pop up more perpendicular to the surface of the water, they stop looking at the bottom of the wave, their pop improves, and they start catching waves.

Why is this always a competitive question? If you can surf a left or a right, how you stand while doing it is less important than if you enjoy it and if you can connect the flow.

Not a lot to say. I surf when I can. I support people being human to each other.
