For buss compression, use 10:1 ratio, medium/slow attack (10-20), medium/fast release (0.4), and aim for peaks of max 4dB gain reduction. Use the side chain to avoid pumping. Thickens up the sound nicely. "makes a song a record"

@Lee Martin yes, on the mix bus. The internal side chain filter on the compressor. It's available on most SSL Bus compressor emulations, as well as many other standard compressors.
Mix trick or trash?

Don't stay up all night trying to mix it. It never works. Go to bed and come back to it in the morning. He says at 4.30am
Favorite channel strip?
In line with the event that’s happening this week… what’s your favourite channel strip, and why? I’m really loving the Super 9000 at the moment, will get into this on today’s session!

Blyss by House Of Khush. That one taught me so much about mixing and mastering. I don't use much anymore, but it really really helped me to understand what's happening by limiting my options, in a good way.
Recording weird things.
What's the weirdest thing you've ever recorded? I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours. Lol 🤣. Mine was flies buzzing around a dog turd. It was for background sound effects at a Halloween party.

I got a bitsniffer thingy that picks up ultrasonic (inaudible) sound from electrical things and makes it audible. So I used it to record my lightbulb.
