Cut Checkers
Looking for some advice on cut confidence checkers! I’ve used the "vertical blinds" effect in the effect palette for conform checks, but I need a workflow to verify that subtle speed effects and split-screen effects are accurate. What are people's favourite Avid-based hacks?

I don't use Vertical Blinds. I draw a series of right triangles in animatte across the screen. I've found that diagonal lines make it easier for my eyes to catch differences. You can also consider a difference matte using the BCC Composite effect or the free Blend-X Plugin (However that plugin, while free, does not come in a native Apple Silicon version, so you'll need to install it and run Avid in Rosetta mode), though I don't use difference mattes because it can hide subtle differences, for example I once worked on a show where our dailies lab has applying a slight sharpening and it was too subtle to show itself in a difference matte. Regarding catching subtle speed effects, it comes down to how particular your editor is. I generally allow a +-1x tolerance for speed effects because different program will use different math to calculate frame interpolation. If it must match 1:1, you should definitely convey that to the VFX vendor or DI department. That said, you really need to check those manually and sometimes with interpolation it really does come down to a judgement call.
Welcome to Our New Platform
Hey everyone, We’re excited to share that we’re transitioning the Master The Workflow community to a new platform — Skool. For those unfamiliar, Skool is a growing hub of online communities covering just about every subject under the sun — from filmmaking and editing to productivity, coding, and more. Some groups are free, others are paid, and all of them are designed to bring people together around a shared passion. Our Feature Film Assistant Editor community will remain a paid platform, just like always. That means only paid students will have access to the course materials — nothing changes there. But this new space will allow us to build something more connected and collaborative. Think of this as your clubhouse. You can start new conversations, ask questions, share wins (and challenges), or just hang out with others walking the same path. And while our private Facebook group is still live and active — and will stay that way for now — we’re hoping this Skool community becomes a real gathering place where we can all interact more deeply and get to know each other better. We’d love to kick things off by getting to know YOU: 🎥 What are you currently working on? 🖥️ Where do you work from — on set, in post, at home? 📸 Show us your workstation (we're nerds for gear setups). 💬 Or just say hi and tell us what drew you to this career path. This is your space to connect, share, learn, and grow — not just as assistant editors or editors, but as filmmakers, creatives, and human beings. ⚠️ A quick note: Right now, this is not a private group. That means others can view the community, but only those who’ve purchased our courses or products (like you!) will have full access. So rest assured, you're still in a cohort of serious, committed learners. We’re looking forward to seeing how this evolves — and more importantly, seeing all of YOU here. Let’s make this a place where the next generation of editors find their people. Best, Larry & Richard Master The Workflow

I'd love to reiterate Larry's welcoming sentiments. I apologize I'm late to arrive to this community, I've been busy working on a couple of projects, that I can't reveal the name of at this point, but both have brought about exciting new features to the Digital Codebook which will receive an update in the very near future. We're happy to have you in this continuation of the MTW community.
