Question for experienced martial artists
I started JuJutso 5 months back just after my 2 children enrolled. It’s the first martial art I’ve ever been exposed to and it’s been eye-opening, a window into a different world. I’m absolutely loving the challenge and just graded successfully to yellow belt. It’s promising to be a really interesting journey. The question I wanted to ask of those that have been training for years is; what advice would you give to someone just starting out, especially in regards to preventing injury and maintaining the body and motivation?

Congratulations on getting onto the mats (often the hardest part!) and earning your yellow belt, Damien! I agree with Master Hakan’s wise words. Personally, I have found it helpful to put the training sessions in my diary and treat them like non-negotiable appointments. Even if I’m tired or lack enthusiasm when I first step onto the mats, I always feel energised after the warmup and never regret going. Also, over the past 7.5 years, I have graded for my next belt at every opportunity which helps keep up the momentum. Finding great training partners and aligning our training schedules has played a key role in my motivation, too.
First warm up & stretches competed!
Yesterday evening I had the honour to take a teens/ adults class at Marrickville for prep zone, warm up, and stretches. I was confident about the stretches, I was also confident about the warm up but excited and nervous. Amazing to see the class work translate into practice. I used pauses, changed pitch and tone based on what I wanted the class to do. My instructions at a couple of times were not as clear as they could be. Everything in class made sense and it was all registered in my head however, when under pressure and in the moment it is hard to apply it all quickly! I had to keep removing my hands from my hips, abd problem solve my warm not accounting for the fact that white belts haven’t been taught tornado kicks! Great to have the opportunity and go for it. Next to review my video ( eek!) thanks Mark & the great bunch of students in the Friday class!

Congrats, Howie! As you know, Darren attended your class, and he said you did a great job and did not seem nervous at all. Context for non-AMA participants: My husband is a 3rd dan, and he has total vision impairment. Body language and demonstrations of technique are meaningless to him. He relies on and appreciates clear verbal instructions and excellent use of tone, pace, pause and pitch. Again, well done, Howie!
Week 3 Call Recording is now LIVE!
Hi all, tonight's call on communication was great! What was your favourite part? The recording is now live for those who missed the live session, and we look forward to hearing your successes and seeing your improvement! Let's keep up the momentum!

My favourite part was @Amanda Symond ’s singing! Hearing the same simple line delivered in many different ways showed me that it’s not necessarily what you say but how you say it. Also, people might not remember what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel.
⏰ Assignment Reminder!
Your week 2 assignments are now due – a friendly nudge that completing them is where the real growth happens. 💡 Remember, watching the lessons is only half the journey. With the deadline looming, I’ll jump in and say that my assignment also would not upload, so I messaged Tash. She asked me to email my assignment to [email protected] so that she could upload it for me.

@Patrick Livingstone Thanks! You’ve confirmed my suspicion. I’ll switch to my laptop for the next assignment.

@Cameron Woods Great to see you here! Fun fact for everyone: Cam and I (plus various family members) graded together at every grading from white belt to 1st dan. I know how much Cam enjoys encouraging other students, especially at coloured belt gradings, and bringing out the best in his training partners at every class he attends.

I’m a 3rd dan who has been an AMA community member since 2018. Off the mats, you’ll find me selling or reading books and hanging out with my family.
