The Identity Trap: Why ‘Agency Owner’ Almost Killed My Business (And What I Chose Instead)
Agency owner, sasspreneur, coach, consultant. All terrible identities to run a business from. The problem is it’s to restricting. When I was an “agency owner” I could only ever offer done for you services. I never even thought about creating a coaching offer because I wasn’t a “coach.” It didn’t fit into the identity I gave myself. And that’s the deeper issue. We take modalities like coaching, mentoring, services, software as a service, and turn them into our identity. I found it extremely limiting. I didn’t see the benefit of building a personal brand since I just saw myself as an “agency owner.” I didn’t think about offering consulting (even though I was already doing that with my clients). All I could offer was “done for you services” since that was what an “agency owner does.” This is one of the reasons why I burned out on this business model. I wasn't connected to my mission, my higher purpose, my calling. That’s why I adopted a new identity to create offers from. I remember one day watching the movie "Harriet." It was all about Harriet Tubmans' journey from slave to one of America's greatest heroes. The movie really highlighted her faith and how God helped her set massive amounts of slaves free. The verse then popped into my head that I've always felt drawn to in Luke where Jesus declares, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free.” That's when it clicked. I needed to reframe my identity in business so I could operate in my calling not just a modality. We are all called to bring freedom to others in our own unique way. So I came up with, Freedom Creator, as the new identity. After all, that’s what we do. We bring freedom to people's businesses and lives through our products and services. And now I have the option to create within a flexible container instead of a rigid one.
