Needle Movers
I saw a video the other day with a coach asking other coaches about what basketball drills and skills are the biggest and quickest “needle movers” for players and teams. I wanted to take it here and ask the same thing. Personally, I have repped some drills and skill work with my players that didn’t seem particularly effective for our team or at least the translation to games/live play wasn’t obvious to my eye. So coaches, if you were limited to working on a just a few drills or skills/fundamentals, what ones would you swear by and consider to be the most effective and quickest “needle movers” for your team?

@Tommy Brown @Shannon Blake @Mike Erickson Love all those drills mentioned. Ones we do all almost everyday is full court one on one with some changing constraints. I start this with my 4th graders. Change where they can dribble to. I usually do sideline to lane line. Focus on offense changing speeds to handle pressure. Run it both sides of floor to get more reps and keep more kids moving through. Really like 2 on 1 shooting. 2 offensive guys on perimeter and 1 defense passes out with a close out and offense either catches and shoots or +1s it to next guy for a catch and shoot. Defense works on anticipating and baiting a pass and offense works on decision making and being shot ready. Like 4 on 3 with 4 offense on perimeter and 3 defense start in key. Coach passes to one of the four and three close out and play. Our ball movement improved a ton when we made the offense stay stationary. Can do it where they can dribble and kick too but keeping offense stationary really makes them move it and when defense makes them work it helps both sides of the ball. Defense loves to rub it in when they get stops. Can be a fun drill. Individual drills - work on 2 feet like Shannon was saying. We do that instead of regular layup lines in practice now. Stride stops are a game changer.
Scoring
Spent the weekend watching some good players competing at the MEI. As usual I noticed a few kids who only had scoring on their mind. To the point their teammates were annoyed. You can tell when a kid gets taught at home that scoring is how they will get noticed. This is an age old issue for coaches. As coaches, what has been your most effective way of communicating and changing a selfish players mindset? @Tommy Brown @Mike Erickson @Randy Reddig

I like playing with pace more, which didn’t happen this weekend as much. Focus on getting the ball ahead to somebody that is open rather than pound the ball all the way up the floor. Defense then scrambles and opens things up for everyone. This changes mindset some. Also really like SAVI language of 7s and 9s. 7 being a wide open 3 and 9 wide open layup. Easier to ask a player if they got a 7 or 9 rather than telling them it was a bad shot. Softens it a bit in the heat of the moment.

Haha I have dealt with that. You might know him. Took years to make much progress. Doing drills that involve reads seemed to help a ton. Body in front what is your read. Get to 2 feet/kickout… those types of drills…
