1 contribution to Fit Over 40
Your body isn't failing you. It's defending you.
Read that again, because it changes everything. Your body has decided that letting go of fat right now would be dangerous. So it won't. No matter how hard you push it. Which means fat loss after 40 is not a math problem you solve with a bigger deficit. It's a permission problem. Your body has to conclude the emergency is over. Once it does, it lets go almost willingly. I've watched it happen hundreds of times in 17 years of practice. Until it does? You can white-knuckle it forever and get exactly nowhere. And you already know that. Because you've been doing exactly that. So let's talk about how to change its mind. There are four signals, and they all say the same sentence to your body: the emergency is over. Signal 1: Stop under-eating protein. Protein is the most metabolically powerful thing on your plate. It protects the lean muscle that dieting keeps taking from you. It costs your body energy just to digest. And it steadies blood sugar, which keeps insulin low, and fat cannot leave a fat cell while insulin is high. Then add fat and fiber. Eggs, beef, salmon, avocado, olive oil, nuts, broccoli, Brussels sprouts. Those foods raise GLP-1, the same hormone the injections are synthesizing in a lab. Your gut makes it for free when you eat like this. Signal 2: Stop punishing your body and start loading it. Cardio was never the villain. Keep walking. But what resistance training does that walking can't is build and defend muscle, which raises your resting burn all day long and compounds week over week. The problem was never cardio. It's cardio alone, at high volume, on low food, with zero resistance work anywhere in the week. Two or three real sessions. Not two hours on a machine at 6 am hating your life. Signal 3: Your nervous system decides whether the emergency is over. Not your food log. This is the one almost everybody skips. Not because it's hard, because it doesn't feel like effort, so it doesn't feel like it counts. It counts more than anything else on this list.
Your body isn't failing you. It's defending you.
