🔥 New piece out! — The Parasympathetic Theory of Thermic Bathing 🔥
Hey everyone! I just published an article that’s close to the heart of how I think about why heat actually heals — and I’d love to hear what this community thinks. 👉 The Parasympathetic Theory of Thermic BathingIn short: heat only becomes regenerative when the nervous system feels safe enough to let go. It’s not about hotter or longer — it’s about restful surrender into the heat. I explore how traditions from sweat lodges to onsen all tap into this same pathway, and why safety is the real medicine of thermic practice. Read here: https://thermaculture.substack.com/p/the-parasympathetic-theory-of-thermic Would love to get your thoughts and reflections — especially from folks who’ve witnessed the difference between heat as challenge vs. heat as restoration. Let’s discuss! 🧖‍♂️💬

Love this. To nudge the idea a little further, couldn't you argue that for some rituals/practices/experiences, especially ones designed to be transformative, there's an inherent "un-safeness" to them? When I think about my most profound times in the sauna, they've all had an element of risk to them. But maybe it's that the risk is taken together, communally, and that generates its own kind of safety?

@Roshelle Ritzenthaler in my experience, a good host can work wonders in this way. Someone who welcomes the new person, shows them the ropes, checks in with them, and is there to answer questions. I've been to others where the host just talks with their friends or the "regulars," and that could be really off-putting to someone new.

Sat on the bench at Hearth in TC a couple days ago! Good heat, cool people, and was my first time using one a them fancy-schmancy cold plunges. There’s another sauna right on the bay that I want to check out next time I’m there, too.

The Ancient Irish Roots of the Sauna Movement?
“The book reveals how this "new sauna trend" is rooted in 3000 year old Irish heritage…” How come I’m the only one who gets in trouble when I bring things like this ☝️up? 😂

@John Pederson I’d recommend any book that looks at sweat bathing through a different lens! I’m only about 50 pages in, but it’s really interesting, and the photography is gorgeous.

Let’s get to know each other! You can use this format: Hey, I’m from ____________. It had been _____ days/hours since my last sauna, steam or cold plunge. I’ll go first… Hey I’m John from Minnesota (the sauna capital of North America 🤘). Bless me father for it has been A WEEK since my last sauna! (But less than 24 hours since my last cold plunge… spending the summer in Arizona getting into the cold side of contrast therapy like never before 🧊)! Here’s a pict of me and my besties glowed up after steaming at Lifetime in Phoenix last week…

Trash talk aside, I will say that I was in Minneapolis a couple months ago and sat on the bench at 612 Co-op and The Yard, and you all have done an absolutely amazing job building so much community around sauna! Came away really inspired, hoping to bring some of that energy back here.
