New Focus: Close your first five customers
During yesterday's call-in, currently called "Fix Your Funnel" I had a bit of an epiphany which was that the direction of this skool, is not nailed down yet. I had watched a skool video that talked about how your skool should make a binary, or specific offer. I am well aware of the specificity requirements an offer, for it to be successful and somehow in my thinking about skool I have fallen into the trap of focusing on what I want to deliver rather than focusing on what a customer might want to buy. The very trap I warn against. It can happen to the best of us, and indeed all of us. It happened to me too. Anyway, no excuses. The action once recognition of a problem exists is to fix it. This is why I welcome problems, accept I can go wrong, because when you go wrong, with humility you can fix it. We are in business, we are not in politics, we are not afraid of being wrong, if anything, we should be afraid of not fixing a wrong. So first the issue, I have written five books and I wanted the skool to reflect that. I figured skool would be an excellent place for readers to meet each other. I knew it would be difficult to focus, each book has 30,000 words on average, about 150k in total. It is tough to get that down to less than a 1000 characters on the about page, a short banner sentence and an even shorter title. From the beginning I have used the graphic that shows the 5 customer rule. It was taken from the first book in the series and the one updated and published: How To Start A Business Without Any Money. Last week I instinctively changed the name of the group to Customers First. I am happy with that. Change has been happening with time, it is an evolutionary thing. I was thinking about this and the epiphany was that the binary offer should be focused on winning your first five customers. This is a clear offer, it is more clear, more focused and it simplifies the classroom. It will be easier to navigate and more attractive to new members. I am working on this change. I had promised myself to give last weeks changes a week before I make further changes, so I will leave everything as is for a few days, for the week to work out. Meanwhile I am preparing for next weeks change which will be focused on winning your first five customers, the benefits of five, and then five more.

This is a valuable realisation, David. I think the shift from “what I want to deliver” to “what the customer actually wants to buy” can completely change how the offer is communicated. The “first five customers” direction feels much easier to understand because there’s a clear outcome at the end of it. I’m interested to see how you shape the next version of the Guild around that.
Before your next call, try this.
Got a client conversation coming up? Before it happens, write down two things: what you think they'll object to, and what you actually suspect the real objection is underneath it. Then join me on Wednesday's call (Price work you have never done before) and tell us which one was true. No prep, no script. Just write it down before the conversation starts.

This is a really useful exercise, David. I like the idea of separating the obvious objection from what might actually be underneath it. Definitely going to try this before my next conversation. 👍
Take the free "How to start a business without any money" course
The real question was never how do you make a lot of money, it's how you spend your time to build something you can own and nurture, something that funds the lifestyle you want. That starts with widening the horizon, putting space between you and the edge, so you can work on the business instead of just in it. Introduce yourself below and the full course unlocks. Step 1: Introduce yourself That's the only requirement. One comment, telling the group who you are and what you're working on right now. Step 2: Take the course, create your plan The course unlocks when you introduce yourself. It was written for anyone starting from zero, and that covers more people than it sounds. A brand new business starting from zero. An existing business that's stalled and needs to restart from zero. A relaunch after a slow year, a pivot, a change in direction. It walks through the five stages that cost almost nothing but that few businesses ever nail, the system that lets you choose when you work in the business instead of being stuck there. If you've already posted a comment you already have access. Step 2: Take the course, create your plan

@David White That’s a strong mission, David. I agree that building something sustainable is much more valuable than chasing whatever trend is hot at the moment.
