New Item for the Studio
I’m testing out a diatomaceous stone drying mat in the pottery studio and I’m really curious if this thing lives up to the hype. It’s designed to absorb moisture fast and self-dry, so my thought is… could this be a gentle helper for clay that’s taking forever to firm up? Here’s how I’m planning to use it: • Placing slabs or small handbuilt pieces on it to help even out moisture • Using it under freshly trimmed pots to pull water from the foot without rushing them • Testing it as a slow, steady drying surface instead of boards or drywall ( my drywall is peeling -- annoying) • Seeing if it helps with those awkward in-between stages when clay just won’t cooperate The mat is porous, meant to absorb moisture quickly, and dry itself with airflow, which sounds very promising for studio use. No heat, no sun, just quiet absorption doing its thing. I’ll be testing it today with different clay stages and will report back with results. If this works, it could be a really nice tool for controlled drying without cracking or stress. Has anyone tried something like this already? I’ll update soon with clay receipts 🏺👀

I did a quick search for sources and various grades of these mats. They seem to be widely available. I did find some interesting data on pricing, primarily based on the product thickness and quality (btw, it should be no shock that there are fakes out there...go figure, right?). Here is what I found: Quality Level = What You Get $Price Range/Budget Thin = basic diatomite $15–$30 Mid-range = Better density & finish $30–$50 Premium = Thick stone, $50–$90 smooth edges, consistent drying Also note: Thanks for sharing your 'New Item", I can't wait to give it a spin! 😊

@Gigi Gaggero I did a little more digging and there are several labels that raise red flags (and I claim no expertise but have a fairly good scam-sniffing nose). Legit mats say: - Diatomaceous earth - Diatomite - Natural diatomite stone 🚩 Be cautious if you see: - “Stone-like” - “Mineral composite” - “Eco-resin” - “Infused with diatomite” There are also some tests once you have made the purchase...but by then you are truly "Rockin'" with glee or "Rollin" in scam-hood.
Can we help each other out?
One of the big challenges on YouTube is to get watch time...and subscribers! I have tried to mention new channels every time I post to YouTube, and it seems to be helping others. But watch time is another challenge. I know I'm getting close to the 1,000 mark, and that's exciting, but I'm still waaay below the minimum watch hours to get my vids pushed to the next level. Perhaps we can help each other out by rewatching videos, or watching earlier videos that we haven't watched yet. I suggest that if you have a channel and want help with this, post your link in the comments, and let people know if you are trying to get more subscribers, watch time, or both.

@Pat Webb Subscribed! I follow a number of clay/pottery people and one thing that keeps me coming back is consistent posting...and that doesn't necessarily mean every day. Consider a weekly event/posting that is same-time-same-station (i.e. Pat's Pots Page Presents!) tune-in Sunday at 7pm EST to see my latest. I might just count myself a Pat's Pot Page Persistent Participant 😉
Requesting feedback
I’ve tried something new on my YouTube channel. I just posted a long format video (79 minutes) of me glazing and telling stories. My intention was making a video that could be played in the background to keep someone “company” if they work alone in a studio like I do. It was fun to make but took longer to upload and edit. My iPad microphone had some glitches which I need to figure out. That notwithstanding, I would value your feedback on this video before I try another one. I put in lots of chapters if someone just wanted to hear stories. Anyway, thanks in advance to anyone who wants to give me constructive feedback. I didn't have to watch the entire video to understand very quickly that you are a natural storyteller with a warm, conversational style that is a true gift. I'm pretty 'old-school' and prefer this landscape format...I see it as an opportunity to allow the background to support the story and frame the pieces from your reveals. That is just me...I know there is a place for portrait format video but full-screen landscape is my preference. I am interested to watch responses on a long video...I think we all know about shrinking attention spans, but now that the technology is better to upload large files maybe that will change things. Best regards...your new Subscriber, Paul😊

@Kendall Carpenter Related or not, I claim her, LOL. We're probably distantly related but the genealogy is pretty thin. Early in her career, I posted something on a fan page and signed it "Uncle Paul". Kristen's group admin took that literally and I started receiving all sorts of updates meant for close friends and family. I did clear that up, but have no issue being called "Uncle Paul" if/when asked about Kristen 😉

I'll confess. I'm "going to school" on your Santa pieces. This is such a great example of textures, form, and color to tell a story. I'd love to see a video of you walking through the steps to create such fun Santa. Kudos!! Nicely done, Lyn!

After weeks/months of behind-the-scenes work, my website is OFFICIALLY LIVE 🚀🎉💝 I would love it if you could take a look & share when you get time. At the moment I am only shipping within the UK whilst I get to grips with it all but will definitely be shipping globally soon. 🔗 https://www.sarahhallamceramics.co.uk/ Thank you for all your support 💝

I know how much work this takes and I commend you for a great launch. I'm an old (really old) IT person and I tend to look at sites from a "best use of real estate" perspective. With that in mind I checked the responsive nature of your site in tablet and mobile phone view and it performs nicely! I would suggest that you consider reducing the amount of real estate at the top so your products have a greater impact when the page is opened... other than that, you are well on you way! Something like this, perhaps:
