Infinite Jest Megathread
"Attachments are of great seriousness. Choose your attachments carefully. Choose your temple of fanaticism with great care. What you wish to sing of as tragic love is an attachment not carefully chosen. Die for one person? This is a craziness. Persons change, leave, die, become ill. They leave, lie, go mad, have sickness, betray you, die. Your nation outlives you. A cause outlives you." This is water: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCbGM4mqEVw&t=5s Character map is attached

@Brian Harrington I’m going to try. I’ve got roughly 100 pages to catch up.

@Dan DiFilippo needs one of these.
How many times a week should you lift/do cardio
I went and saw a nutritionist recently, and she told me that going to the gym 5 days a week to lift is too frequent, I should only do it twice a week. That that's what "they" recommend. I think she's a fucking moron for saying this You guys are all big and muscley. How frequently do you lift? She also said I should do cardio once a week. ???

Hilarious. Big but not muscly. 3 minimum. 5 seems excessive, you need recovery time.
Mandatory Monday
What are you grateful for? What are you most excited about this week?

I am grateful to be home after traveling for work. I am grateful for this group and the group of us crazy enough to read IJ. I am grateful for my amazing wife who works her tail off and loves me unconditionally. I am grateful for my son Marcello who has taught me what’s truly important in life. And believe it or not I am grateful for my job. I work with great people and get to spend the majority of my day outside doing whatever I choose.
Freedom from
In IJ they talk about American’s constant want of ‘freedom from’ everything but never the importance of ‘freedom to’ do things It paints us as petulant children, avoiding responsibility and claiming it as a virtue. We want entertainment or drugs even if they kill is, all in the name of choice But we won’t make any collective effort to create a responsibility of choice. Is freedom of choice really better if we only ever choose the self, or choose things that are terrible for us?

@Brian Tome great take. Laughing my ass off. What are you addicted to?
Favorite money podcast
I fell off the podcast wagon about 2 or 3 years ago. My favorites were Choose Fi (especially the episodes w Sean Mulaney), the one with Doc G and the one with Frank Vasquez. I liked BP money sometimes too, and the one with Carl Jensen (hilarious). Anyway what are you listening to and why? I think Choose FI got formulaic although the host seems like a sweetheart.

Recent Naval episode on Modern Wisdom is good. My First Million has some bangers now and again. For a daily news podcast I like The Journal.
