Healing Sauna Retreat Center
Hello everyone! We have a farm in SE Ohio, and we are starting an on-site sauna healing retreat center. I am an acupuncturist and herbalist, so of course there will be lots of classes and treatments as well. Here is a pic of our little garden and propagation area. We made everything ourselves (except for the ancient barn). It was just grass when we moved here a few years ago. Anyways, looking forward to building some cobin saunas and sharing the journey here!

Sanctuary! :) What about for that roof, box it in cob then do a living roof? Even outer garden boxes in cob?
Building a cob oven
I was working on building a Cob Oven today here in Oregon at the Cob Cottage Company and thought I would share with you the process. I mentioned the insulation…It’s also possible to make an insulation mixture with Clay and lots of straw packed tightly or lover rock mixed with Clay, or sawdust mixed with Clayif you don’t have access to perlite. I like using the pear light though because it forms together into a ball and stays pretty compact when putting it over the thermal mass layer. We will probably take out the sand mold tomorrow and get a few little fires going in the oven to dry it out before putting the insulation layer on. It’s very important to make a very dense cob mix of up to 80% Sand 20 % with not very much water so that it forms together into a ball and won’t slump when putting it on the oven this will also help to keep the oven from cracking. If your Oven does crack though, when you fire it up, don’t be too alarmed. it can easily be patched up.. It does help in the curing process to have the Oven dry slowly so small little curing fires are better than big raging fires for the curing process.

Nice. When do you do small curing fires, after or say wait 30 days after build??
Cobin site. Has anyone done a greenhouse roof with a cobin?
Hello, this is a picture of the site for my cobin that will be my greenhouse and Art Studio in colorado. I'm currently leveling the ground and digging out a trench for a french drain since the site is at the bottom of a hill. I'm also collecting pallets and I'm planning for the roof to be part living room and parts triple layer polycarbonate to let light in. Has anyone done a roof like that before?

Hi sorry, will your cobin be at top or bottom of the hill? I am thinking to put 2 membranes on for roof if major green house too. But glass to use as plexiglass or other type to protect against smashes in storms. Unsure, is this what you mean or just open green roof?

@Monica McGuire Yeah. I love the wide porches, 2 or wrap around so easier also on square. ZOME roof, unsure on that? I can look up. Overhang as in not to skimp on more not just a minimum roof is great.
For offshoots
Hi. Working on clay slip mix and cob for offshoots on trunks1st. There is no where I have seen any 1 doing this and tired of pruning offshoots. Hope this solves that. Made video on this. Short is here, full is on my Tuby. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Db4iAUex5VQ/?igsh=eHRnbnV3d2UyMWkw

Ok. Monica & rest yes, I said from live.I do plan to shred straw w/ weed eater in trash can 1st. On cob, we do know it needs a cap or else, erodes. I am chancing over roots against offshoots. Stones over would be good. No, I won't use sprays even vinegar to cause I did that to my rose bush years back and it killed entire bush against killing off the briars. And I had a few more bushes beside it. Some 1 gave me advice to and even being natural killed bush

Lesson learned. I took this course here, just did not see or missed clay slip needs to be applied then cob asap after. I have waited days and looked up way after fact clay slip can't be applied and dried out! Live & learn, so now I have to reapply @ base all over as I cob.
My most recent building project -- Not cob yet, but hopefully soon!
Hi everyone! I have gotten behind on this course due to my own most recent building project. Unfortunately, it is not a cob project (but, those will be on the way soon!!), but is a simple, totally off-grid pine Scandi-hut style cottage that I built with friends and family to set up for my office space for work to see clients and host classes. I would love to build something similar to this out of cob in the future on my property. I think that would be an amazing space, way better than the current pine space. In the future, as this building wears over time and the roof is no longer good, I plan to turn it into a live roof with moss or turf and to potentially add natural plasters to the internal walls. I love how much flexibility cob and natural finishes give us, even for traditional building projects!

@Michelle Caron Looking at this again, what I for see is raising walkway high so it drains on sides off it, to not collect rain water. Are you having alot of fill? Perhaps it is downhill, then not so much.
