Before you can apply for grants, loans, or contracts, your paperwork must say: “I’m ready.” Here’s your non-negotiable business paperwork checklist: Articles of Organization (or Incorporation) Filed with your Secretary of State. This shows your business is legally formed. EIN (Employer Identification Number) Your business’s version of a Social Security number, free on the IRS website. Operating Agreement or Bylaws Even if you’re a single-member LLC, have one. It defines ownership, control, and how profits are handled. Business License or Permit Check your local city or county website, many small business owners skip this and get denied funding because of it. Business Bank Account Never mix personal and business funds. You’ll need your EIN + LLC paperwork to open this. Business Plan (1–3 pages minimum) Lenders want to know your mission, services, and financial projections. D-U-N-S Number This reports your business credit history to lenders.
