Nobody told me that going from 1 employee to 11 would be harder than going from $0 to $500,000
Nobody told me that going from 1 employee to 11 would be harder than going from $0 to $500,000. I thought scaling the revenue was the hard part. It was not. The hard part was realizing that every person I brought onto this team was a direct reflection of the standard I was willing to accept. And in the beginning, I accepted too much. Not because I didn't care. Because I was so focused on growing fast that I confused activity with output. Someone would be on calls all day and I would convince myself they were performing. But calls don't retain clients. Results do. It took me longer than I want to admit to understand that a team of 11 people operating at 70% is not a team. It is a liability. The moment I started treating every hire like a direct representation of what Visionair stands for, everything changed. We got harder to join. We got smaller before we got better. And the work that came out on the other side was at a level that none of our clients had seen before from a Voice AI agency. Building a team in this industry is not about finding people who are excited about AI. It is about finding people who are obsessed with the outcome the client needs and will do whatever it takes to deliver it. That person is rare. And they are worth waiting for.

This is exactly why I’m selective about where I work. I’ve seen too many teams hire fast and accept average output. The result? Developers shipping code that “works” but doesn’t move the needle for clients. I’m the type who gets genuinely frustrated when a client’s experience isn’t excellent even if the feature is “done.” That obsession with outcomes is what separates good developers from great ones. Posts like this give me hope that there are still founders building teams the right way. Would love to hear how you evaluate that mindset during the hiring process.
