Roy, we play Gospel and CCM at our church (probably 60% CCM; 40% Gospel). What helped me out greatly was the realization that probably 90% of the CCM songs (and many gospel ones too) are some variation of a 6541 chord progression with a 2 or 3 chord sprinkled in somewhere. It might be 6541 for verse, 3415 for pre-chorus, 5461 for chorus, and 1465 for bridge for example. Once you get your hands on some chord charts, start by working on memorizing just the chorus. Then add in verse memorization, etc and continue building from there. Once you do it enough, you'll notice that many songs follow that same chord progression road map and it will make memorizing songs so much easier. One word of caution though, while CCLI is great, it's not perfect. Some of their cords aren't matched up exactly with the recordings you'll have to use your ear. If you're playing along to CCLI and you notice something doesn't sound quite right, trust your ear and start searching out the right note with your ear. Hope this helps!
Here's one for you on a framework to look at how I got my church chops together. This one is more for you if you have areas you are looking to tighten up and feel a lot of frustration currently your playing. Tick them off step by step. What part of this do you resonate with the most?
