Merry Christmas 🙌🏾🎁🎄🎅🏾
Are y’all having an amazing holiday? I sure hope so! I put the tree up at 6 this morning! I realized I was procrastinating with putting up the tree because I was suppressing my emotions about having a grown son who is home from his first year of college. As I scrolled through yearly FB Christmas memories, I decided to focus on all of the new memories that we will create as my adult son, like him cooking the full Christmas dinner this year 🙌🏾 💕 For all of my parents with grown children, how do you all celebrate Christmas?

The power of adapting
I realized one of the reasons I love mentoring the younger generation is that I can see some of their struggles in what my journey has been. A 15 year old I'm working with was about to quit just because we can't meet in person. One of his goals is acting. I told him the truth about the business which is everything is virtual. Auditions, most classes with casting directors, most auditions for agencies. I don't like it either but I have to adapt. Had I not adapted I would've never met this amazing group of people who are shooting to make a difference, I would've closed so many doors in the movie industry and mentoring others would be more limiting since I would have to physically be there. The ones who adapt accomplish the most. I hope I was able to shine a light on him. I know he's capable of living his dream and I hope this can inspire someone who had to hear this. What's the biggest challenge for you in terms of adapting?

Thanks for sharing! Adapting is so important, yet challenging sometimes because we have this idea of how things “should” be. We have to be open to allowing things to unfold. Our job is to focus on WHAT we want rather than the HOW. Once I learned that, adapting became much easier.

@Joshua Mermelstein Exactly!
Plan B. Ally or enemy?
We might have been told to have something to fall back on in case what we want to do doesn't work. When I worked on a job just to pay my basic needs, I'd come back tired not wanting to do more stuff. There would be times where I'd push myself to keep working as my intention had been to use my 9 to 5 to finance my 5 to 9, but now I'm working full time on my passion and I feel more focused to do the best I can do and keep improving. What's your view on having a plan B? What would you think could be more practical for your teen?

This is a great question. I’m going to come back to this.

@Rhonda Lawson It makes perfect sense 😀
Inspiration
Jim Carrey once said "if there's a chance you can fail at something you don't want you might as well give a chance to do something you love". Last Saturday I had the honor to be in a Q&A with Tom Kenny (the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants) and he said "if someone else will take the job if you don't apply you might as well do it. Worst case someone else books the job anyway and best case is you get to be a part of something you wanted". Why do I say this? Because we seem to worry too much about playing it safe. As a teen and a young adult you have everything to go all in. No child to look after, no family to maintain, no debts. The sky is the limit. Take a chance. It only takes a leap of faith. What's something you believe your teen is struggling with that keeps him or her away from their dreams?

@Joshua Mermelstein I’ve done a lot of work with him over the years. I teach social and emotional skills so I used various strategies to help him get there. On top of that, I’ve always given him a spiritual foundation, taught about the power of the God within, knowing how to speak power over his life, and having faith in God 🙌🏾

@Joshua Mermelstein I would say providing a spiritual foundation for sure. It so important that they know how to tap into the power that lies within and also encouraging and supporting actions that helped to create small wins.
