Which industry norms can you...?
Another daily “10 ideas” epiphany, at least for me personally. (You can see my previous one here.) My list of 10 ideas today was: "1358. 10 norms in my field (or in the area I am working on right now)" The motivation for this is the old Dan Kennedy chestnut, if everybody’s doing it, then do the opposite, because once something becomes the norm, you can only get normal results with it... ... and normal results, meaning being at the mean or the average, are bad in any field. Not because it's average, and we want to be special. But because average is usually right at the poverty line. So I made my list of industry norms. It had things on it like “daily emails” and “stories.” The trouble is, those are good practices. It doesn’t make sense to do away with them. Then I had an idea. It’s to come up with a slight tweak or alternative to the norms in my field, rather than thinking about doing away with these norms altogether. A couple examples from my list: 3. Welcome sequences => Welcome squeeze pages or “no opt-in” lead magnets (Andre Chaperon style) 8. Sharing testimonials and case studies => Selling testimonials and case studies You can see my complete list in the attached image if you're curious. It was a cool exercise for me, and maybe some of these ideas will turn into something. I wanted to share it with you to encourage you to do this exercise yourself. If you’d like to try it, do the following two steps: 1. Make a list of 10 norms in your field (or around a specific project you’re working on now) 2. Come up with a tweak or replacement for each norm — without worrying about doing away with the norm entirely If you do make this list, take a screenshot of it and post it in a comment below. You might encourage other people to do the same, and you never know what other ideas can get sparked.
