This is actually an extremely common issue — and honestly, the way you described it tells me you already have a high level of rhythmic awareness 🙏🏾 What’s happening is that you’re able to initially find the primary pulse correctly, but your internal pulse stability is not fully anchored yet. So after a few bars, your attention starts getting pulled toward secondary rhythmic layers, syncopations, instrument tumbaos, vocal phrasing, or internal subdivisions inside the music. In other words, you’re still hearing real rhythms… just not always the shared foundational cadence that the partner dynamic is organized around. This is exactly why many dancers can “feel musical” individually but still drift away from the timing that followers and social dancers naturally interpret together. A huge part of Salsa Musicality Mastery is training sustained pulse stability — learning how to maintain connection to the primary cadence even while hearing all the other beautiful rhythmic information happening inside the music. @Kevin Matthews Great question 🙌 Although we do have partner resources and application work inside the program, one of the big focuses at the beginning is developing internal timing first. Think of it like building your own relationship with the music before bringing another person into the dynamic. When your timing becomes more stable internally, things usually start happening much smoother in partnership because you’re not relying on the other person to hold the rhythm for you. You hear it more clearly. You feel it more consistently. And then when you step into partner work, you have a much stronger foundation to build from. The goal is eventually both: Internal timing → Partner timing → embodied musicality 🎵🕺
