Lessons From 500+ Proposals: What Actually Worked For Me!
After submitting hundreds of proposals and analyzing countless successful freelancers, I've noticed patterns that consistently lead to client responses and project wins. I wanted to share these insights with the community since I wish someone had told me this when I started. Proposal Writing: The Approach That Tripled My Response Rate The biggest mistake I see freelancers make is writing about themselves instead of the client's problem. Here's the structure that transformed my results: 1. Opening hook that shows you understand their specific challenge Bad: "I'm an experienced developer with 5 years of experience." Good: "I notice your e-commerce site is experiencing abandoned carts at checkout - this is likely costing you thousands in lost revenue each month." 2. Validate with relevant experience (but keep it brief) Bad: "I've worked with many e-commerce sites before." Good: "I solved a similar checkout abandonment issue for a furniture retailer, reducing their cart abandonment by 37% in just two weeks." 3. Outline your specific approach to THEIR project Bad: "I can help with your project using my skills." Good: "For your situation, I'd recommend first implementing error detection on the payment form, then optimizing the mobile checkout flow which typically accounts for 60% of abandonments." 4. End with a clear next step (not an open question) Bad: "Let me know if you're interested." Good: "Would you prefer to discuss this approach via a quick 15-minute call tomorrow or would you like me to send over a detailed implementation plan first?" Pro tip - In the End, write PS: and ask some good questions. This definitely helps! - (Advanced stage Pro tip) Research the hell out of the Job. Create a 5-minute Loom video, explaining everything that you will do and how you will do and what impact it will create. You will definitely get the call back, because in a sense, you already passed the interview stage as well. But the point here is to explain everything in the Loom video

@Thelma Kanyambi Totally hear you — it’s super frustrating when even boosted proposals don’t get viewed. A couple of things that helped me 1. First 2 lines matter most – I treat them like ad copy. If it doesn’t grab attention, the rest won’t matter. 2. Simple and Short - Keep Proposals simple and short. Dont over complicate and trust me when i see, Video proposals really work 3. Timing – Apply within the first 5-10 proposals. After that client will not see proposal so far down below Also, I’ve built a small tool called ProWrite (prowriteapp.com) that I personally use now to craft proposal intros and full responses faster (without sounding generic). It might help you save time and test different angles quickly.
Getting clients on Upwork
How long can it take for one to be successful on Upwork or start getting multiple projects? How feasible is it to do full-time.

Hey Michael, I know exactly how challenging it can be to break through on Upwork when starting out. I was in your position not long ago. Regarding proposals, they're absolutely critical to success on Upwork. I found that personalizing each proposal to directly address the client's specific needs makes a huge difference. I used to spend 30-45 minutes crafting each one, really analyzing the job description and showing how my experience matches exactly what they need. Also creating a small Loom video on what you can do and how you can do it and send it to client with proposal will create a great impact

@Olaniyan Micheal Check out Nico's videos or any other relevant YouTube content to help you optimize your profile first. Once your profile is fully optimized and you begin sending proposals, you will definitely start to attract views. The key is to prioritize optimization first, and then focus on proposals and everything else will follow.
Tools for Proposal Generation?
Hey everyone! Quick question — what tools or strategies do you currently use to write proposals on Upwork? I’ve tried a few AI tools, but most feel generic or too slow. Curious what’s working for you?

@Lloit Mejia already doing it I have few wining proposal templates that i have already tested a lot. I am now creating an app where i input certain details and it can generate customizable and personalized proposal based on my template. adding few other things in it like experience, skillset, JD, tone, style to make it more according to my liking
