My market's gone quiet, so I've stopped pushing
Something I've been chewing over this week, and I'd love to hear from anyone who's been through a quiet patch in their own market. Demand for my main service, workplace mental health training, has dropped right off this year. I wanted to know whether it was just me, so I got Claude to dig into it. It isn't. The biggest provider in the UK has lost about a fifth of its income in two years, and their own accounts put it down to rising employment costs. Employers' training spend per person is the lowest it's been since records began in 2011. SEO helps people find you when they're looking. But if hardly anyone's looking, no amount of SEO is going to make them. I'm not going to wear myself out trying to force demand that isn't there. What I am doing is keeping going, steadily, and AI means it takes very little of my time. Claude writes and publishes a blog post most weekdays, and LinkedIn goes out three times a week. My part is mostly reading what's gone live and saying yes, or change that. I'm also leaning on the free stuff, because free is what people can say yes to when budgets are this tight. There's my podcast, and we run free network events every quarter. It keeps people connected without asking them for money they haven't got. So I'm still visible and still findable when budgets come back, and the energy I'd have spent pushing goes into the stuff that's actually growing. If you've had a quiet spell in your market, what did you do? Push harder, or ease off and wait it out?

Hi @Catherine Eadie Thank you for your note and for receiving my thoughts in the same spirit they were sent 🙂 So much boils down to the 'who' - as in organisations that have an understanding and willingness to not be reactive but more reactive, because as you say, putting out fires is a totally different ball-game to making sure a flame never ignites in the first place. I cannot help feel a series of smaller tests from a marketing capacity could result in prospects, like for example C-Suite audiences while making sure these organisations also have the financial resources as there is nothing more challenging than helping folks who cannot 'afford' to be helped. As you well know so much of this boils down to time, energy and effort and I could not help smile at your 4 year timescale, as I am on a similar plan myself! I only say that as there are only a few things I can focus my time on with the 4 year deadline approaching, so I imagine you too may have a situation where you know if you do 'a,b and c' there would be something to show for it - only the bandwidth may not be totally there. On a final note my partner created a WhatsApp group for a number of her colleagues - some who are still at the organisation, and others who have left. They were pretty high in the organisation so if you ever feel there would be benefit in chatting with them or hosting / sharing your thoughts and frameworks etc, I'd be more than happy to put you in touch. Cheering you on! 🙂 #FourYearsAndCounting

@Catherine Eadie you're most welcome! Regarding my partner's group I have absolutely no idea 🤭 It is not in any way shape or form a commercial group, but more a group of former work colleagues wanting to be there for one another on the back of a tough, collective experience. As a marketing / ad man, that is where we were taught to mine the words, thoughts and phrases that can assist with our marketing and outreach, so I imagine you'd gather some really great insight while also adding to your network, so just know I can introduce you if needed. And agreed, you cannae always scale word of mouth! Enjoyed chatting with you 🙂
