I need help with improvising solos.
I have been trying to get a solo part in Jazz Band but I can never actually do it. Written solos, freshmen aren’t allowed to try them until 4 months in Jazz, and I can’t improvise any improvised solos. I don’t even know where to start. I don’t know music theory and when trying to learn it, I just don’t get it. I don’t know what notes sound good together, and I don’t know what to do to change that. I also don’t know how to improvise a solo on the spot with just a key and measure count of how long the solo is. Like.. idk how to do that, where I am told to improvise a solo in measure so and so for so and so measures and the song is in the key of Ab. I don’t know what the other players play during that section, I don’t wanna play something that’s dissonant all the time.

Just start to listen to recordings. As many as you can, just find and listen, and you will train your brain and ear by hearing examples. HUNDREDS are on YouTube and more. Just realize you don't start learning to walk and then jump into olympic sports. Not judging you but your comment sounds like you want to jump into the action when you don't even know the rules of the game. Try to be patient and you will get there.

Another thing would be to get and play and record yourself playing those written solos. After learning what's written you will start to think your own melodies that fit the song. Show them you have learned and are ready to solo. Also, you learned to speak English by hearing it, then imitating it, then speaking and later writing it from what you learned and understood. Music is a language.

Taps For Veterans
Hey kids, I recently found and applied to Taps For Veterans, a service which provides free-of-charge the aforementioned. Perhaps soon I will be blowing TAPS for more Vets. I spent 11 years playing I don't know how many services. (BTW, in my profile pic I was playing TAPS for the USS Iowa decommissioning ceremony, 1990.)
