Mutes?
I recently got a cornet, and I'd like some opinions on a cup mute. Should I go for the classic Shastock or the Denis Wick adjustable cup? I think the classic sound via Shastock is worth considering but the adjustable cup offers sound options. Pls tell me your thoughts. Not like I need one for any particular gig

When it comes to most gear-related questions, my answer is usually the same: try them out and see what sounds and feel you like the best. Thereโ€™s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to mutes, so if possible, try as many as you can and pick your favorite.

@Mike Lang I see! I'll let trumpet/cornet players chime in

Solo
can someone give tips on how to play this part in garnet by vandercook? every time i play this specific part it always sounds weird because the amount of times the notes go onto the ledger lines and no matter how many times i practice my scales slurred it still sounds bad especially since i have to move my slide a lot

Have you tried practicing it really slowly? Like even half speed or less with a metronome. Of course you'll have to sneak in more breaths, but usually if you can get it not sounding "weird" at the slower tempo, then it's just a matter of working the tempo up.

@Joselyn Ramirez I would say practicing at a tempo so slow that it's easy is a good first step. One way you can do it is to move the slide quickly immediately after playing each note to help you be ready to move the slide quickly at the faster tempos.

@James Brave man On iPhone I would record it in voice memos, hit share and โ€œsave to filesโ€, then in one of these posts click the paper clip icon and hit attach file and choose the recording
