Is more giving you less?
What if wanting and then achieving more actually created less for you? Less energy. Less joy. Less time doing what you want, with the people you want. We’re constantly told that success means growing the business, earning more money and chasing the next goal… But maybe success is waking up and actually liking your life. Maybe living your best life means slowing down long enough to recognize how good it already is. Ambition isn’t the problem… The problem is pursuing “more” without deciding what all that effort is supposed to give you. Build the business. Chase the goals. But create something meaningful. Don’t become so busy building a better life that you never get to live it. What does success actually look like for you right now? #BeAPro

Adam, that makes the goal much more concrete. For a contractor aiming for more family time, I’d put owner hours alongside revenue on the weekly review. If another job increases sales but takes every evening to quote and coordinate, it may be moving away from the goal. Deciding which work to stop taking can be part of improving the business too.

Cheers Adam. I'll answer the actual question though, since I dodged it a bit last time. Right now success for me is boring: the work booked far enough ahead that I'm not anxious about January, and being able to say no to a job without doing sums about it first. That's it. I'm not chasing a number. The thing that changed it was realising the busiest stretch I've had was also when I saw the least of anyone. Revenue looked great. I was quoting at 10pm and resenting work I'd chased. More turned out to mean more of the part I like least. The bit I'm still bad at is that saying no feels like a risk every single time, even when the numbers say it isn't. Did that get easier for you, or did you just get more comfortable doing it scared?
Free business resources for fellow contractors
I built my contracting company to over $500K in total revenue, and I want to help other small contractors succeed. All the knowledge on my website is free, whether you need help marketing, advertising, quoting or need help diagnosing an issue within your company. All the resources and tools on my website are free. We don’t put anything behind a paywall or sign-up form. I have a real passion for construction and I’d like to save fellow contractors the headache if I can. By the way, my name is Michael, nice to meet you! https://blackmountaintech.ca

@J Robert Lamontagne Nice to meet you too. What kind of work do you do? If you’re not sure where to start with the resources, the free business checkup helps you narrow things down to a priority instead of trying to tackle everything at once. If you want to go deeper into your own business, you can book a consultation here: https://blackmountaintech.ca/consultation.html. I’d be happy to help you work through it.
What is normal?
What’s one problem in your work or business that happens so often you’ve started treating it as normal? Constant delays? Chasing people for answers? Fixing the same mistakes? Working late just to keep up? Recurring chaos isn’t normal… it usually means a system is missing or broken. Drop yours below. Let’s see if someone here has already found a better way that can help you out with something . #BeAPro

Adam, that waiting-for-answers example is a good one. I’d keep a simple decision list: what needs deciding, who can approve it, the date we need the answer and which work stops without it. Then send the client the two or three decisions that actually affect the next week, with a clear recommendation where possible. “Please choose A or B by Thursday so we can order for Monday” gives them something much easier to act on than “just following up.” Is the delay on your other projects usually the owner deciding, or the question getting passed between people?
