Credit cards in Portugal?
Any recommendations? A community-member here is looking for a native Portuguese 'credit' card, a charge card - NOT debit card - perhaps with cash-back and other perks. ***Using a US/UK etc credit card can be costly on the currency conversions!*** I use both Revolut and Wise, which have their place as multi-currency account cards that are accepted all over Portugal, but they are not credit/charge cards in the traditional sense. Maybe our Portuguese friends here can suggest some options beyond cards that might be on offer from our 'checking account' banks? @Rui Correia frankly British banking sucks. I’ve had an account with Barclays for 60 yrs, put hundreds of thousands thru it. I’ve banked in GB, USA, Canada, Africa, New Zealand, Guernsy, Spain, Chile and Argentina. I don’t need to look at what happens in3,5,7 yrs cycles. I only worry about banking today. With the exception of Canadian banking system, Millenium has them beat, except of course the hassle of dealing only in Portuguese. But then try speaking Swahili in your Barclays Bank Just sayin!

@Rui Correia oh to answer your question, it is sometime difficult to Open accounts and get credit cards in smaller locations that are without doubt less sophisticated. Particularly people living in a fixed income( even though it’s Probably twice a Portuguese income) I think that’s the question, no hidden agenda there👍

A flat is what you buy vegetable on a “ flat of tomatoes” etc. the Brits my have invented the language, but like many words they didn’t get that one right eg: lift/ elevator, Otis did invent that one. Rule/ruler tough one. Rubber/condom🥴 M

Criminal facts in Portugal
Because there is crime in Portugal (it's not a paradise...), I'll place some ocasional news about the subject here. Seven people were convicted to prison (7Y9M to 16 years) for a total of 36 robberies. From our experience and familial evidence, it works. We’ve had severe colds but not flu in 40+ yrs. As for Covid, had it twice and at my age without the vaccines, I probably wouldn’t be writing this! As for vaccines in general, ask the parent if the dead children in Alabama if they should have let their kids have the measles vaccine. They work get over it and get it done.

A Nobel day! 📚
Olá, bom dia! On this day in 1998, a former locksmith from a small village in the Ribatejo got the phone call every writer dreams of. José Saramago had won the Nobel Prize in Literature, and he is still the only writer in Portuguese ever to do so. Today’s sheet, Nº 8: José Saramago, is in the classroom, with four phrases for your next trip to the livraria (bookshop). One of them every expat needs: “Tem este livro em inglês?” (Do you have this book in English?) Watch out for “biblioteca”! It means library, not bookshop. Over to you: have you read any Saramago? Which one would you recommend to a beginner? Boas leituras! (Happy reading!) 📖
