30 yrs ago, this wonderful woman said yes when asked if she would take me as her”lawful wedded husband” not sure where the lawful parts come in. What a wonderful day. We were married on the pulpit of a good friend’s yacht, officiated by our clubs Fleet Chaplain, a retired Anglican Minister ( who had lots of Druidic symbols on his sash) surrounded by lots of friends and family, we had a great afternoon. We left for our “2nd Honeymoon” on a friends boat, with a fridge stocked with champagne and not much else. Without this woman we would not have made it around Cape Horn 10 yrs later. Stuck in a weather system of the coast of Equador, going backwards, for 2 days, she convinced me to keep going. We enjoyed some of the best years of our sailing life after that momentous moment. And here we are in Portugal on another adventure, we’re celebrating 30 yrs with a 2 week trip to Greece, including of course a weeks sailing. What a journey it’s been so far💕💕💕💕💕

Monday briefing - 27-07-26
Great start to the week with @Bob Wenger, @Brian Mathers & @Peter Haglund Muito obrigado amigos! - FIVE missions will be picked, each, and 'celebrated' on Friday - Parabéns to @Lori Wong, this week's 'Cadet of The Week'! - Suggested missions included polishing an elevator pitch, escalating basic neighbour/café exchanges beyond “Olá, bom dia,” switching all Portuguese contacts to Portuguese on WhatsApp and email, listening to 15 minutes of Portuguese radio daily, and watching children’s TV. - Members shared practical requests (Bob needs barbershop vocabulary; Viv, newly arrived in a non-English-speaking village, wants conversations longer than 30 seconds). - Carl emphasised the core SWAP spirit - Show up, Wing it, Adapt, keep talking - and invites everyone to a Friday 5 pm drink to celebrate progress. - Ongoing one-to-one help is available via the community timeline and WhatsApp. Boa semana e boa sorte!

Criminal facts in Portugal
Because there is crime in Portugal (it's not a paradise...), I'll place some ocasional news about the subject here. Seven people were convicted to prison (7Y9M to 16 years) for a total of 36 robberies. They robbed houses, with old folks inside, and businesses, perpetrated in the districts of Coimbra and Aveiro in early 2022.https://www.jn.pt/3644566357/sete-dos-15-arguidos-do-caso-teia-dourada-condenados-a-prisao/

About a year ago, a lady asked the followers of this forum for information regarding the safety of life in Portugal. She was concerned as a single person that it might be a problem. We pretty much all know what the answer is. But based on Antonio’s reports to us, I pointed out that based on what I know, the main crimes in Portugal appear to be “crimes of passion” ( there have been a lot lately, maybe it’s the heat) Street crime mainly pickpockets by foreign gangs in the two main tourist spots. And finally, the intervention of the GNR, PJ, Navy and The Spanish equivalents on the drug trafficking. I can’t believe the number of interventions each year in the Guadiana River, the only issue with that is a lot must be getting past the police forces to keep risking it. And I’ll say this again, theirs corruption almost everywhere. But Portugal seams good at policing themselves. There are lots of examples in Antonio’s missives of this. The Police here are I think exemplary. When our visitors finally found a parking spot near the cafe up at the castle in Tomar, they struggled trying to pay. They expected a credit card meter, but it was coin only. They asked the two policemen keeping an eye on cars, if it would be alright if they went into the cafe to get change. One of them reached in his pocket and gave the €1 needed. They came out to pay back and they’d gone. Try that in Lisbon😂
@António Ferreira another “ crime of passion” or a crazy man. Only time will tell!
