Homework for Future Tax Bosses: Set Up a Training Schedule for Your Team
Let’s be honest, having a great team starts with great training. Whether you're gearing up for tax season or building a powerhouse firm from scratch, your agents can only be as strong as the systems you set in place. ✅ Your homework this week:Create a structured training schedule for your team. That means thinking beyond just tax law. Your team needs to understand: - Tax software navigation - Document intake and client onboarding - Customer service & communication etiquette - Compliance and ethical standards - Sales strategies to close the deal Break your training into bite-sized weekly topics and include hands-on practice sessions. You can even assign team leads to help coach recruits. The goal? Have every team member trained, confident, and ready to serve your clients like pros before peak season hits. QUESTION: Have you already started building your training calendar? What’s the first topic you’re covering? Let's discuss.

Why Budgets Aren’t Just for the Broke
The mindset shift everyone needs, no matter their income. When people hear the word budget, they often think of struggle, restriction, or being “broke.”But the truth is this: Budgets are a wealth-building tool, not a survival tool. Financially successful people use budgets more than anyone. A budget isn’t about limiting your life, it’s about directing your money with intention. Here’s why everyone, including high earners, needs one: 1️⃣ Budgets Create Financial Control Money without a plan disappears fast. A budget shows: - Where your money is going - Where it’s being wasted - Where it could be working harder for you You can’t control what you don’t track. 2️⃣ High Income Doesn’t Guarantee Financial Stability Many people earn six figures……and still live paycheck to paycheck. Why? Because without a budget, expenses rise to match income. A budget protects you from lifestyle creep and ensures your money grows—not just goes. Budgets Help You Reach Financial Goals Faster You can’t save, invest, or pay off debt consistently without a plan. A budget allows you to: - Build emergency savings - Pay down debt strategically - Invest intentionally - Prepare for big purchases Budgets turn goals into timelines. 4️⃣ Budgets Reduce Stress + Decision Fatigue When you know what’s allocated for bills, fun, savings, and investments, you stop: - Making impulsive choices - Guessing if you can afford something - Feeling guilty about spending A budget brings clarity and peace. 5️⃣ Budgets Help You Build Wealth Long-Term Wealth isn’t just built by earning more. It’s built by: - Managing money - Maximizing cash flow - Avoiding unnecessary debt - Making informed financial decisions Budgeting is the foundation for all wealth-building habits. 6️⃣ Budgets permit you to spend Contrary to the myth, a budget doesn’t say “NO,” it says: “Here’s HOW MUCH you can spend without hurting your financial future.” You get freedom and responsibility.

New Team Members? Don’t Just Throw Them In – Onboard Them Right!
If you're bringing on new staff for tax season, handing them a login and hoping for the best is not enough. You need a structured onboarding process that sets them up for success, saving you time, stress, and costly mistakes. Here’s how to create a smooth onboarding experience for your new tax pros, VAs, or admin team: Step 1: Prepare Before They Start Set up their software access (Tax software, CRM, email, portals). Create an onboarding packet or welcome folder with everything they need: Job expectations Team calendar Training guides & login credentials Communication channels Step 2: First Week = Foundation Use their first week to: Walk them through your company's mission, goals, and culture. Explain your client process from lead to filed return. Assign them a mentor or team lead they can go to with questions. Schedule short daily check-ins to answer questions and build confidence. Step 3: Train, Test, Repeat Provide hands-on training with your software, client scripts, and workflow. Give them real tasks (with supervision) so they learn by doing. Test their knowledge and provide feedback early and often. Use tools like Google Drive, Loom videos, or ClickUp to organize training materials and track their progress. A strong onboarding process builds confidence, reduces turnover, and keeps your office running smoothly during peak season. Building a team next season and not sure where to start? Ready to Grow Your Tax Team? Here's How to Attract the Right People!
Building a strong, reliable team should be at the top of your list. However, before you can hire, you need to create a job description that attracts the right talent and post it where they can see it! Here’s how to do it right: Step 1: Develop a Clear Job Description Start with clarity. Your job post should include: - Job Title – Keep it simple and searchable (e.g., Tax Preparer, Client Intake Specialist, Virtual Admin). - Job Summary – What will this person do? Be concise but informative. - Responsibilities – Bullet points work great here. Be specific. - Requirements – What skills, certifications, or experience are needed? - Pay & Perks – Be transparent if possible. Mention bonuses, commissions, or remote work options. Let your company’s personality shine through. If your office has a fun, flexible culture, be sure to mention it. Step 2: Post Where the Talent Is Once your job description is solid, please post it on job boards where your ideal candidates are likely to search. Here are a few that work well for tax professionals: ✅ Indeed – Great for volume and local visibility ✅ Facebook Groups – Tap into tax professional communities ✅ LinkedIn – Best for experienced pros and networking ✅ ZipRecruiter / Craigslist – Depends on your area, but still useful! Don't forget: follow up with candidates quickly. A slow response can cost you a great hire. Building a dream team doesn’t happen by luck; it happens by strategy. Start by writing more effective job ads and posting them where the right candidates are actively searching. Need help writing a job description or knowing where to post?
