Anyone linked in with TheSpace Dunbar?
Not sure if anyone within our community is linked in with TheSpace Dunbar? Looks like another community working together to provide enriching environments for their young people, interesting as it reads like it’s very much youth led….. https://www.facebook.com/100066631803800/posts/1129002532664130/?mibextid=rS40aB7S9Ucbxw6v
Climbing Everest in North Berwick – For Our Young People
Most people who dream of climbing Everest picture ice, ropes, and oxygen tanks. I’ll be doing it a little differently… on my doorstep. This year, I’ve set myself a Misogi – a once-a-year, life-defining challenge that pushes me far beyond my comfort zone. Inspired by Jesse Itzler’s philosophy, I wanted something that would test me physically, mentally, and emotionally – but also give back to the community I love. So here it is: I’ll be climbing North Berwick Law enough times to reach the height of Mount Everest – 8,849 metres. To put that in perspective: The Law strava segment at just 143 metres. Which means I’ll need to climb it 64 times, up and down. That’s over 9,000 metres of climbing. It will be long. It will be gruelling. And there will be moments where I’ll want to quit. But that’s the point. Because for me as a Dad of 3, this challenge is about more than just the climb. I’m doing it to raise money for the North Berwick Youth Project – an incredible organisation that supports our young people, giving them a safe place, positive role models, and opportunities that can change the course of their lives. While it is a local charity I am a New Zealander so hope I can inspire more young people around the world. So while I’ll be battling fatigue on the hill, I’ll know exactly why I’m doing it. For the next generation. If you can, please donate as the goal is to raise a £1 for every metre climbed. Every pound will go directly to supporting young people. Together, we can make sure they climb their own mountains, whatever they may be. Thank you for your support – it means the world. If you fancy a walk up the Law on the 3rd and 4th of October I would appreciate the chat You can book in here a time slot into my google doc. Or if you just want to sponsor £1 for a metre climbed https://www.justgiving.com/page/nick-mccashin-ultra-dad

‘What kids told us about how to get them off their phones’ article
Super interesting article, inline with the ideas being promoted in the community chat…https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2025/08/kids-smartphones-play-freedom/683742/?utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=the-atlantic&utm_medium=social&utm_content=edit-promo

This made me feel good/reassured about our family's approach to letting our kids ‘roam’ our local neighbourhood. It would be wonderful if there were more indoor spaces they could roam to during the colder, darker months as they get a bit older.

@Nick McCashin 💯 agree, I feel NB community satisfies the ideal of outdoor safe spaces for children to ‘roam’ within. But that is 💯 my greatest fear for our children being out and about. They can have all the road safety awareness they need, but if a driver is speeding or distracted whilst driving in local communities, the results can be devastating. Whilst kidnapping percentages might not have changed in decades, road safety incidents certainly have.

Hi 👋 I’m Melissa (Mel), also a kiwi. Have been living in Scotland since 2009 and my husband Laurence (Loz) and I moved out to North Berwick from Edinburgh in 2017 when our eldest was born. We have 2 kids in P4 & P2 at Law Primary. I’m the current co-chair of the Parent Council and also coordinate the Pre-loved uniform scheme for the Primary. In terms of work, I’m an accountant and work for NHS Lothian overseeing the Estates and Facilities Budgets for the Lothian area, so I have a bit of insight into public funding and resource allocation and how that can apply to local Estate management. We chose NB as our home because it felt like a community full of families with similar goals and values to our own, a genuine and wholesome place, full of kind, interesting and fun people. The expression ‘it takes a village to raise a family’ comes to mind a lot when you are raising little humans; as we have no family close by we wanted to belong to a community that we could depend on (and who could depend on us) and NB community has not disappointed us in that regard. In terms of a wishlist - I hear what so many of you have already said in terms of needing greater capacity to facilitate local community activities, including flexible indoor spaces. I feel that with the recent growth of the wider East Lothian region, the mindset that NB residents should have to travel to be utilising facilities should be refreshed. We have the space and the population to support better local facilities - imagine not having to travel to 30mins plus access an indoor sports facility! Not to mention creating safe & enriching environments for all ages to thrive, even when it gets dark at 3.30pm and is lashing with wind and rain outside. Thank you Nick for the invite - this conversation is SO on point so noting my appreciation and gratitude to you for taking the initiative to get the ball rolling on this.
