This offseason has been a really big deal for me, knowing what I'm working towards, and knowing how far I've come. There is no doubt that I have gotten much better at my craft since the season ended, and that's due to the work I put in, the help I've gotten from coaches, and my determination to succeed. The first thing I worked on in the offseason was my leg swing. When I started kicking 2 years ago, I had only learned from watching basic youtube tutorials. For the past two years, I haven't had backswing when kicking the ball. I was giving up potential power and good ball rotation, so I knew that it needed to change. I got to watching film of my mentor/teammate, Noah, and studied the timing of the swing, which was what had kept me from using backswing in the first place. I realized that in between the last step before your plant and your plant, neither of your feet are on the ground for a split second. (example in first 2 clips) This was what unlocked that ability for me. I started working on my swing, and I saw inprovements very quickly with ball rotation and kick power. (3rd clip) Next, I needed to work on my follow through, which is still a work in progress. I knew that I'm costing myself lots of power when I don't follow through and hop through my kicks, so I started working on that, and I'm still working on it. Another point of emphasis recently was slowly and comfortably transitioning my contact point from the side of my foot to that third eyelet. This has helped me to get better rotation and power, helping with accuracy, too. Most recently, I've noticed that my stance has been getting narrower and narrower, causing lots of accuracy issues. I've made it a point to take my side steps just a bit wider to get that wide but not too wide stance, and pairing that with plant foot direction improvements, the accuracy gets a bump up, too. I do this because it's my passion, and with how far I've come, giving up isn't an option. No obstacle is too hard for you, hard work and dedication will take you a long way. Keep working.
