¡¿Qué onda güey?!
¡Qué onda Yaprendices! This week we're exploring español de México! Let's get into it! Let's start with some of my favorite phrases in Mexican Spanish! ¿Qué onda? = Qué pasa = what's up. I love it because it's literally like "what's the wave"- which feels is cool. By the way- "onda" and "ola" are both words that mean "wave" in Spanish. Güey - dude / guy- usually pronounced without the "g" sound- more like "wey" Mande - a response like, "yes?" No manches - be for real!? Stop playin'!! Qué padre - How cool! / That's dope! Chavo/ chava - guy / girl If you are curious about more common Mexican expressions- definitely check this out! Your challenge this week is to comment below your favorite Mexican Spanish phrases in the community. Let's see if you can get a conversation going around it en español!

“Que padre,” porque “padre” significa “father, “cool” and “dope” al mismo tiempo.
Same language… different worlds
Let’s compare: 🇪🇸 Spain is the birthplace of the Spanish language- located in Europe 🇬🇶 Equatorial Guinea is a small country in West Africa where Spanish is the official language Essentially, Spanish became an official language in Equatorial Guinea after Spain gained control of the territory in 1778 through the Treaty of El Pardo and later consolidated its rule in the early 1900s. During colonial rule, Spanish was established as the language of government, education, and administration. Even after independence in 1968, the country retained Spanish as an official language due to its lasting institutional and cultural influence. It’s fascinating to think about how the language always adapts to the people, not the other way around. https://www.dreaming.com/blog-posts/the-only-african-spanish-speaking-country-equatorial-guinea-explained 💬 What do you think? Which do you prefer?

@Malcolm Garrett remembering that about folks in the states is important in my opinion. I think about the fact that half the time idk what folks in Atlanta are saying, and they’re speaking English, a language I’ve known my whole life. So, why should I expect to know what folks are saying in a language I’m just now learning and allow myself to get frustrated? Or to be surprised in any way when they use words I don’t know to mean the same as ones I do? I watch Defying Destiny on Netflix and idk how many times the captions have said it’s a word in English and I’m like they definitely did not say the word I learned to mean that. And with that, I go back to English and remember there can be 20 ways to express one thing. Especially with slang.

@Malcolm Garrett it is but I appreciate it. lol Also, I appreciate finding out who else has watched/is watching DD. It’s a lot to learn from that show. Particularly for people living here in Medellin.
Un Vale Canjeable: Yaprendí con Telenovelas
Hola Yaprendices! 💡 Okay so it's lookin' like I’m gonna have to reschedule today’s Yaprendí con Telenovelas live session. Did you know a "raincheck" is "vale canjeable" in Spanish? That's what we're gonna do with this one. Un vale canjeable 🎟️ Anyways...I honestly did not consider the fact that it’s "Easter Sunday"- which typically means people are with family, at church, etc..., and with most of our members unavailable, I want to make sure we have a better turnout so the session feels more fun, interactive, and worth your time ✨ When you have a moment, please drop a comment below with: 🗓️ An ideal day that works for you ⏰ A time you’d realistically show up I’ll reschedule based on what works best for the majority! Hopefully we can make this happen later this week!!

Live Session #1: Velvet
Hola Yaprendices!! Okay so, I don't know if you noticed- but our first live session is going to be this Sunday from 11am to 12pm! I hope you all can make it! If not- please suggest your ideal times for our Yaprendí con Telenovelas sessions below and I will see what works best for most of us! I chose this day based on the results of that last poll. Since this week's culture focus is Spain, I chose a Spanish series for our first session. 🎬 About Velvet 🇪🇸 A romantic drama set in Madrid’s fashion world, Velvet is perfect for hearing authentic Spanish from Spain—from “vosotros” to everyday expressions you’ll actually hear in real conversations. Check out the trailer here! Use the link provided in the calendar to join this session at 11am this Sunday, April 5th!

Setting a reminder now.
Los Saludos: Greetings
Hablando de la cultura de España In Spain - it is customary to greet someone by kissing them on each cheek- even if you're meeting them for the first time. It goes something like: 😚 Hola 😚 mucho gusto/ ¿qué tal estás? How does this way of greeting people compare to how you greet people in your own community?Comment below your thoughts on this! I personally used to feel that it was way too invasive- but I eventually got used to it and found it to be quite endearing.

In Colombia; I generally see a kiss on one cheek. I can’t do that to people I’ve just met though. I’m so not used to that. I’m actually just getting used to doing so with a woman who I know at a juice bar I frequent. And that’s only cause she actually did it first. lol Hell, I need consent to give a hug; let alone a kiss.
