2 contributions to Domestic rabbit breeding help
Welcome everyone
How are you finding the classes so far? How about we share a bit about yourself, what breeds you have, how big is your rabbitry and where are you from?

I’m Mary, based in southern Indiana. I run MMC Farmstead, a working rabbitry focused on performance, genetics, and long-term health—not pet-store mythology. I primarily work with Harlequin, New Zealand lines and my own developing composite project (Sentia), built from carefully selected production and show stock. My breeding program emphasizes growth rate, feed efficiency, structural correctness, and reproductive reliability over cosmetic trends. My herd size fluctuates seasonally, but I typically manage anywhere from 40 to over 200 rabbits depending on the time of year, with hands-on daily observation and data tracking. I’ve been working with rabbits for over a decade and spend thousands of hours a year on nutrition, genetics, and husbandry—both in the barn and in the literature.
Question time
Tell me what breeds you have? Do you know what coccidiosis is? Are you familiar with signs of RCD/RHD?

I raise national level Harlequin and New Zealand in the United States. I am working on developing the Senita to apply for a COD through ARBA . We have greatly reduced instances of Coccidia by stopping the feeding of loose hay, and being careful to select feeds that do not contain corn or to mant Carbs . RHD , is luckly not in Indiana at this time but quarantine and bio security measures are practiced none the less when traveling to areas where it is present, to avoid cross contamination.

@Kathy Davis depends on the state. I know most of the west it is now endemic. But im in Indiana with no documented cases , so I would think they would still be open for reporting if one showed up..
