Daylight length and gender ratio of kits?
Hi :) In your experience, does day length have any effect on the ratio of male:female kits? We raise rabbits indoor for bio/physical security reasons, and we've always had the standard ratio of boys to girls. Last year we didn't notice a timer had malfunctioned, and the rabbitry ended up in 24/7 lighting for about 2 weeks. We ended up with around 3 bucks out of those 2 litters. Yeah... Wow! Since then we've kept them at around 17/7 in lighting, and we're still getting higher rates of doe. Have you seen this before? I've read studies on the average doe ratio going up when there is plenty of feed available, but nothing on lighting.

That's really interesting, I can't say I have experienced this as I didn't have a shed with lights. Mine were in a garage with natural lighting.
Welcome everyone
How are you finding the classes so far? How about we share a bit about yourself, what breeds you have, how big is your rabbitry and where are you from?

@Hayley Magon I've been out of showing for a couple of years now. Who did you get your angoras from? Where in NZ are you?

@Mary Margaret Conley I would love to talk to you, I'd love to talk about the findings I had on producing our own pellet feed for our rabbits. Plus I do want to do a class on genetics. I worked mainly with solid colours, and some shaded and broken colours.

Please read, let me know if you have any questions. Have I missed anything?

Welcome
Welcome Hayley! It's taking me a bit longer than expected to write up the class on Diseases sorry everyone. I hope to get it up next week for you all to look through.
Question time
Tell me what breeds you have? Do you know what coccidiosis is? Are you familiar with signs of RCD/RHD?

@Mary Margaret Conley Is RHD still a reportable disease for you? It's been a few years since I have spoken to any breeders from the USA. As I write up these classes I'd love everyone's feedback. So it can be developed into a resource to help new breeders get it right first time. Not have to learn the hard way like I did 😞
