Sketchbook Portrait
My first attempt at an oil portrait—not exactly what I hoped for, but every stroke feels like a step forward.

Great work. I think this is pretty good even for first attempt. I’ve yet to try the paints (water, acrylic, oil etc). I’d be over the moon if my first attempt was like your brush with and good shapes. 😊👍
Figure Drawing essentials- Shading the figure
Loads to take in but it is a brilliant 1.5hour lesson from @Chris Legaspi . I have plans to watch it again- watched it twice in this week. The main take away so far is no matter how much render I do, I cannot cover up bad foundations of the figure. It re-emphasises to me the importance of getting the foundations right before shading and rendering the figure. Awesome references too.

@Christina Mackay thank you Christina. Notan - 2 values only? I think that is what it is also called. I’m not sure. But I tend to start with 2 values dark and light. I always get it very messy. And lose the forms due to lack of control on my part.

@Christina Mackay thanks Christina. I’ll keep working at it
Finally, some proper drawing time
Yeesh, so I've pretty much spent the last month or two dealing with exams and projects. I was basically doing drawing exercises this entire time. I did manage to do lesson 2 and 3 though. Also got distracted trying to learn how go draw hands, which turned out pretty well. But finally holidays begin in 2 days and I've had an annoying itch to do some serious art practice for the last month. Just 2 more days. Here is anything I deemed notable practice from this time period, except the drawing exercises of course.

Well done. It’s a challenge but you are doing well. Keep it up. Love your name by the way. Reminds me of people I went to school with in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe- long time ago.
What’s Harder In Your Opinion ?
Recently, @Chris Legaspi, @Gimmel Goffe and I had a really interesting conversation and Drawing vs Painting. I’m in the belief that personally, drawing and linework is much more difficult than painting. Where describing form In line is extremely difficult for me because my brain starts drawing my ideas of what I’m looking at, instead of what’s actually going on. As opposed to painting, I’m forced to see edge and value and describe it as such. So what do you guys think? Is line drawing harder or easier than painting in your experience?

Both approaches knock me out the park for six 😅. But I have a feeling it depends on skill level on both drawing and painting. The more you do them and develop your own simplified approach (while staying true to fundamentals) the better you get. Then one day you might decide ‘nah, I’ll paint this project coz the vibe to paint and deliver is strong’ Then another day you decide to draw in ink because you feel like it. For me, both are challenging now. Future me will think back on this for sure.
Win or No win ? 😁😭 (Arrived)
So I made it into the Royal Portrait Academy Exhibition at Hull Gallery. And getting the drawing over there was a real struggle. My museum glass was damaged. So i tried to get a new one. The gallery was closed because of illness and i had to do many phonecalls. And I am on the country so there was no alternative. So I got one on Amazon which took forever to arrive and it did just in time. Then the passepartout they send me was too small. Another one would have taken too long. So I had to cut one myself. Only had strathmore bristol for that. Then the DHL service here was full with schoolkids because they where buying all their new books there. I waited forever. Then their computer would not take the adress in UK. Until we gave up and I drove to another DHL Packing station. The Computer also did not take it. Then it turned out that express costs more than a hundred bucks and the computer HAS to take the adress for that. So i chose normal delivery. It said in 3-5 days it will be there. Yesterday was the last day for the gallery and my DHL said it has arrived. Today the gallery wrote me it is still not here. They give it another day or so.... And it is close. In York. Wish me luck. The struggle is real. My nerves cant take this guys 🥹 I aged 10 years. The hair I don't have turned grey. I can feel it. Edit : It arrived !
