Soon be time for chopndrop
I love this time of year, things are still trying like the zinnias, wiw theyve been outstanding, some are going to their sleeps. I will soon be clearing, I wait til I see them collapsing then start the process of replenishing. Hard work on the hands, chopping biomass and then straw it too. Say night night and thank you plants for your hard work and sustenance. In the spring pull back the straw carefully and ta da nurtured soil, fed and protected. I only do this in autumn, it invites lots of things you might not want too close to active plants. I feel all toasty knowing the creatures get a lovely cosy spot for winter too. They soon vacate once weather warms up.

@Mary Roach its so mild weve got an extended season! The caulis that stopped started -Ive had a rush of them. My toms are ripening by the day. I cant keep up with the sauce making 😁 and my greek beans have new flowers too which like you is nice to see, I cant cut anything down when its still so happy and providing forage . It is similar to french weather so thats fine by me👍

They just want profit and squeeze the producers dry. Thats the actual problem , their greed. Say if they did freeze prices? They will claw their percentages back by paying producers less. They are shameful. I go to the smaller supermarkets . I wouldnt put a penny in the big ones. EspeciallyS, A, W . That makes me feel like Im doing something.

Tomato Seeds
Is it possible to use the seeds in tomatoes that we eat to grow tomato plants? or is this what they do anyway? If so has anyone tried it? 😉 To be honest I buy the little tomato plants.

Of course Alison, however, theres important points. F1 will not be true, or be right. Many types inc F1 will be hybrids if theyve been in contact, a greenhouse full of different F1s and varieties. Heirloom are your only true hope. They are different and come true from seed, unless anyone can say different. You could save the other non heirloom and grow them and end up wuth little. There should be sales on now or soon...stock up.on heirlooms x

Peat Free Compost
Sorry for my naivety but why is it important to use peat free compost? Is it about chemicals? Many thanks

@Allys Farmer yes I didnt find the usual brands any good but strangely..Aldi peat free, really good. Way better. Im now onto the idea we shouldnt just be using compost and are we being conned too, as you saw your seedlings did fine in raised bed matter. Plants needs the minerals from soil too and many have always used the john innes ranges, so yep Im going onto mixes. I might even sprinkle in a bit of rockdust. Its like making a cake lol.
