Am I studying the right things?
Last week I finally got my reach360 training link from westinghouse. No instructions or order of what to open or start on first. I started in the Fundamentals for Jr RP Technicians, Rev1 and completed 2 sections over the weekend but I think that might be for the NIST tests specifically? I think I'm supposed to be following the courses that are in the 3rd picture, not the 2nd, can someone that's gone through the training confirm?

@Adam Steinmann yes and no. Bolded sections are important to know, but really anything from the guides/slides can be tested. There is no conclusive way to know what your specific test will ask, they are random, each exam is different; it’s like they have a large question bank and each test just randomly choose questions from it. Bolded items are more likely to be on the test is what I was told.

@Adam Steinmann that’s my best advice. Read everything provided, study and be prepared to answer questions about all the topics; including knowing the equations.
Insurance
How does insurance work as a contractor for these jobs?

You can get insurance through them when you get your first job, but once you are laid off you can choose to stay on with Cobra. It’s not ideal and I can’t give you prices as I have ins through my husband.
How is your first outage?
For the people who started their first outage this year as decon or rp, how is it? Things you didnt expect? Things you wished you prepared more for? Is the day to day 12 hour shifts tolesome?

@Adam Steinmann All 4 of us Jr. RP’s were cut, (2 on days and 2 on nights) also one deconner, and then like 10 other RP’s. I know at least one of the Sr RP’s asked to be laid off because he had another job to go to right away and he wanted a short break in between to see his family. Perhaps some of the others also requested it. I was bummed but also expected it was probably going to happen. Having money saved is 100% a good idea unless you have a partner who can help pay the bills until you get fully integrated with the outages. But even then, I don’t know how it was decided who got laid off.

@Daryl Wright we had to know what each instrument was used for, how it functioned, what type of radiation it measured, what unit it measured in and when you would choose it. They had sample instruments there for us to pick up and practice with; although most of them didn’t actually function anymore. We had to demonstrate how to do a room/area survey and complete a survey map with correct symbols/shorthand, a large area smear, set up an air sampler, and how to use the air sample counter. Also we had to demonstrate how to take smears and frisk them. And talk through proper technique. Don, the proctor for this part of the qualifications, would tell us what our meter said at various times so we had pretend readings to write down. They had a sample area set up with various postings, rad rope, SOP, etc and we had to find what was wrong or missing or needed to change. NOTE: we spent about 2-3 hours with Don, a veteran RP of 40+ years, going over all of these things, doing demonstrations, he answered questions, he asked us questions, posed issues, went over scenarios, and practice and explained things BEFORE we were expected to do these tasks on our own. But in order to pass we had to complete these tasks for Don one on one within an 1.5 hour time frame. They scheduled the STE’s they were called in 2 hour windows to allow time for him to take a break in between to write up your evals. You don’t practice proper dress out/removal until you get to the plant and it’s a course you take there.
Jr RP Task Qualifications Training
After taking the first exam I was given access to begin studying for the second set of courses. I have emailed the training contact at WH and haven’t gotten a response. Anyone in here completed the Jr. RP program through WH recently?? I have a couple questions and would love to know if anyone has the answer - 1. Are we expected to complete the course work for the second set of courses BEFORE the 1 week training? Quizzes and all? 2. Have you received any info from WH with further details about the training? Thanks in advance!

@Elliot Fitall we filled out an application when we got our first job offer. Which for us was not until we were already mostly done with the second half of the training.

@Cierra Howard thanks for taking the time to answer. I’m through the whole program now and at my first outage.
