@Sandra Lozano if I were a young woman now, instead of the 80s, I would have wanted to follow in my Dad’s footsteps. He was a golden gloves boxer. Instead, I signed up at a dojo for self defense and conditioning. Even though I was new and it was obvious I wasn’t good yet, it was a real privilege when more experienced students took the time to spar with me. I was inexperienced, so of course they held back, until my 200 pound 40 yo male sparring partner said real life ain’t gonna hold back. He helped me learn leverage and take down someone his size because in real life, that’s what I needed, skills that work when real life arrives. Getting hit over and over again is invaluable mental and physical conditioning. We honor each other when we practice: train hard, fight easy. Not to sound like a Hallmark movie, this is the truth: a few months later I was stalked on campus (I was a dangerously naive freshman). When he grabbed me from behind, I knew what to do. After I flipped him and he was on the ground so was able to get away. I saved myself from rape - or something worse - and all because my fellow students honored and respected me enough to make sure that when life hit me hard, I could hit back! Go for it… and I hope to see you on PPV!!!
