After yesterdayโ€™s Weed Appreciation Day postโ€ฆ you might be thinking: ๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œOkayโ€ฆ I appreciate themโ€ฆ but I still donโ€™t want them.โ€ Totally fair. The good news? Container gardeners actually have a BIG advantage when it comes to weeds. Letโ€™s make the most of it ๐Ÿ‘‡ ๐Ÿชด 1. Start With Clean, Quality Soil (This is where most weed problems begin) If weeds are constantly popping up, your soil might be bringing them in. What to watch for: - Reusing old soil without refreshing it - Using garden soil (instead of potting mix) - Compost that wasnโ€™t fully broken down What to do instead: โœ” Use a fresh, high-quality potting mix โœ” If reusing soil, mix in new potting mix + compost โœ” Remove any visible roots or plant debris before planting ๐Ÿ‘‰ Think of this as setting the stage for a weed-free season ๐ŸŒฑ 2. Mulchโ€ฆ Yes, Even in Containers A lot of gardeners skip this step in potsโ€”but it makes a HUGE difference. Why it works: - Blocks light (weed seeds canโ€™t sprout) - Keeps soil moisture steady - Reduces how often weeds show up Easy container mulch ideas: โœ” Straw or shredded leaves โœ” Small bark chips โœ” Coco coir โœ” Even a thin layer of compost ๐Ÿ‘‰ Just 1 to 2 inches can dramatically cut down weeds โœ‹ 3. Pull Them Early (Tiny = Easy Win) Weeds are like uninvited guestsโ€ฆ The longer they stay, the harder they are to remove ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Your new habit: โœ” Do a quick 30-second scan when you water โœ” Pull weeds while theyโ€™re small โœ” Get the root (especially taproots like dandelions) ๐Ÿ‘‰ This one habit alone can prevent 90% of frustration later After yesterdayโ€™s Weed Appreciation Day postโ€ฆ you might be thinking: ๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œOkayโ€ฆ I appreciate themโ€ฆ but I still donโ€™t want them.โ€ Totally fair. My biggest problem for weeds was bird seed. Iโ€™m low on money for mulch but we have plenty of leaves around the apartment. Can anybody tell me the best way use them?
๐ŸŒฑ Seed Starting Done Right โ€“ Day 3 of 5 The Most Common Seedling Killer (Itโ€™s Not What You Think)
When seedlings suddenly collapse, most gardeners think: โ€œBad seeds.โ€ โ€œCold draft.โ€ โ€œToo much water.โ€ โ€œNot enough water.โ€ But the most common seedling killer has a name: Damping off. And once you see it, you never forget it. Damping off is a fungal issue that attacks seedlings right at the soil line. Youโ€™ll notice: * Seedlings that looked fine yesterday * Suddenly leaning or falling over * Thin, pinched-looking stems near the soil * Collapse within hours Itโ€™s fast. And frustrating. Damping off thrives in: * Overly wet soil * Poor airflow * Crowded trays * Cool, stagnant conditions Itโ€™s not about bad luck. Itโ€™s about moisture + still air. Sound familiar? Weโ€™ve been talking about soil structure all week for a reason. ๐ŸŒฑ ๐‡๐จ๐ฐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ซ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ˆ๐ญ (๐๐ž๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐ˆ๐ญ ๐’๐ญ๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ) Prevention is everything here. Not garden soil. Not old reused soil. Moist like a wrung-out sponge. A small fan on low makes a big difference. Moving air discourages fungal growth and strengthens stems. โœ” ๐๐จ๐ญ๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ฐ๐ก๐ž๐ง ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐›๐ฅ๐ž This keeps stems drier and reduces surface fungus. Unfortunatelyโ€ฆ no. Once damping off sets in, affected seedlings wonโ€™t recover. But you can: * Remove infected seedlings immediately * Improve airflow * Adjust watering * Let the soil dry slightly The key is stopping the spread. ๐š๐ข๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž Almost every seed starter experiences damping off at least once. Itโ€™s part of learning the moisture-air balance. The good news? Once you understand prevention, it becomes rare. ๐Ÿ’š ๐…๐ข๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐“๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก๐ญ: ๐’๐ž๐ž๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ ๐๐ž๐ž๐ ๐€๐ข๐ซ ๐š๐ฌ ๐Œ๐ฎ๐œ๐ก ๐š๐ฌ ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ The goal isnโ€™t constant moisture. Itโ€™s balanced moisture. Healthy seedlings grow in conditions that feel fresh, not swampy. Get the airflow right, and you eliminate most problems before they start ๐ŸŒฑ Have you ever had seedlings collapse overnight?

I need to buy me a fan. Is there any special type of fan you should get for your seedlings?

@Donna Scarborough I have seedlings on floor because I had to transplant them to bigger containers. Theyโ€™re across from the front door. Not real close. I notice when I have the screen door open a little to get air my seedlings would get a gently breeze and move a little. I think thatโ€™s probably better than a fan and I didnโ€™t plan it.

Itโ€™s more like: ๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œUghโ€ฆ not again.โ€ ๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œWhere did THAT come from?!โ€ ๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œDidnโ€™t I just pull you yesterday?!โ€ But todayโ€”๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐–๐ž๐ž๐ ๐€๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐œ๐ข๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒโ€”weโ€™re flipping the script just a little bit. My biggest problem is bird seed. That wonโ€™t be a problem anymore. The big wigs from are apartment buildings just told me we canโ€™t feed the wildlife anymore. The squirrels keep coming to my door. I love my wildlife friends. Even the mess they made in my plants.
Overwintered coleus
