I forgot to put clothes on my kids… 🫣
My mom came to stay with us for the weekend and one of her favourite things to do when she comes is to go swimming with my daughters Weekends are pretty busy for us these days, we have Story time at the library, gymnastics, soccer, sport ball, etc and this weekend we decided to also go swimming with Nana. Now normally I am pretty good at following the weekend plans And my wife is amazing at keeping everything running smoothly She's so great at thinking of all the little things that need to happen to have a smooth day with the kids You know like… - little healthy snacks, - returning the library books, - packing the soccer bag. - ... and on this snowy day I was trying to be helpful by getting the kids ready for the pool. I Threw on their suits, put their swim shoes and a coat on knowing that my wife would have all the clothes packed in a bag for after swimming. Welp… we got to the pool And the kids hopped out of the car with bare legs and swim shoes on their feet My wife just looked at me with disappointment and disbelief. "No pants? no boots? These swim shoes are for swimming not walking into the pool in the snow?" I didn't think it was a big deal because it was just a short walk to the pool. But in my wife's response I realized something. You see my wife has an entire operating system. She has a flow, she knows what needs to get done, by when and how. And I messed up her system. I wasted our time. And added to the invisible load my wife often carries. And it got me thinking about systems ... (as you do 🤷🏼♂️ when your a biz coach?! ) Just like my wife's system for getting the kids ready, Your business needs reliable operating systems too. Without them, you're basically walking into a snowy day with swim shoes on unprepared and making things harder than they need to be. The truth is, most coaches are operating like I did this weekend winging it, thinking they're being helpful, but actually creating more chaos and missed opportunities.
