Pillars of adult learning
What would be your words of wisdom or top tips to someone just starting violin or thinking about it? Do you have any secrets or things looking back that helped you keep from getting stuck? I was thinking there are 5 main pillars of adult violin learning. But after a little convo here with @Graham Acres and @April Ellis I think we may have just discovered #6. (The convo resulted in it appearing that while everyone else is playing Holly Jolly Christmas, both pirate and vampire music will be a focus here this December 💪🎻. Go us haha) This is my running list of main “pillars”: 1) Community (yay Skool for making this possible again) 2) Bite sized video lessons 3) Alternate working on techniques and songs 4) Play music you like 5) Asynchronous support (like VideoAsk or Skool so you can get feedback from a teacher and keep progressing without having to synch schedules for a lesson) 6) Do what you want 💥 I guess the new 6 goes together with 4 but it can be expanded to more than just song choice. Violin learning is notoriously rigid because it was designed for children in a high stakes time. Adults can figure out what’s working for them and not, and therefore can have total freedom in the approach. Mix and match systems, have more than one teacher, play a song that’s too hard, disregard any or all of my pillars etc, etc Then if you do get stuck, adjust. It’s not the end of the world. Anyway, now I’m preaching to the choir. Would you add anything to my pillars list?

@Graham Acres I resonate (pun intended) with your second pillar (keep violin out) and add that if you can designate/reserve a specific private room exclusively (or nearly so) for violin practicing, that would be ideal for reasons that relate to reducing procrastination and eliminating as many psychological and physical obstacles to practicing, as possible. For example: (1) Leaving your violin in an accessible state (in an open case with shoulder-rest attached) means you can quickly pick it up and get to practicing with no delay, (2) Leaving your music on the music stand eliminates wasting time to find it, and (3) Practicing in a designated room can help elminate FOBH (fear of being heard ) while screeching and learning the most difficult instrument in the world! Finally, designating a room exclusively for violin should help protect the violin from damage by others, when it's in an open case.
LOTM Day is Nigh! Sep 25! Aka Thursday!
Hi all! Would you like to plan to post something this Thursday in honor of the day? I've created a new discussion category called "LOTM Day 2025 Tradition." I'm new to this Skool group thing, and we got started just a couple weeks before LOTM Day this year. If you'd like to participate in the holiday, please post your version or even the tiniest snippet in the tradition folder on Thursday. Some ideas that I've recommended to students this week: -Just your five-note-roll -Any 5-note roll practice step -Jig bowing rhythm on one open string -Any part of your A minor scale -A photo of your home viewing set up and snacks to watch Last of the Mohicans Then Friday we start prepping for next year! ;-) Here's a step by step video for practicing five note rolls.

This recording took a lot of work and video takes. . . . I will continue to improve it.

Thank you, Graham. I remember when Jenny first started touting the LOTM piece and I was smitten. I am grateful that she posted a doable arrangement. At the time, I said I have got to play this. It has taken years to get to this point, and I like to keep it in my current repertoire.
Welcome violinists and friends!
Please post a photo of your practice space or just say a few words about why you picked up playing music. This group is about adult learning in addition to violin, so all instruments welcome!

Well, it's been a while since I have worked on LOTM. I have the Taylor Davis arrangement (TCF Music Publishing) I got from MusicNotes online, and slurred double-stops start at measure 50 that are interspersed with ones bowed with detache strokes through measure 62. They are not complicated but to keep in tempo, I find it necessary to play most of the double-stops as detache.

I can post to the group, but want to be sure we are talking about the same arrangement.
