Struggling (all my life, it seems) with de-essing
Hey all, one thing I've noticed is that esses sound different (and worse/lispier) when the volume is low. Anyone else have this same perception, and why is that? What are your go-to de-essers? I've tried BSA's DSR, XVox Pro's De-esser (in the vocal chain), Izotope RX-11 De-ess, and iZotope Nectar 4 DeEsser with really no luck.

Ralph, I'm a bit of a newbie, but have a couple of suggestions. One: try clip gain attenuation, ie. pulling down the volume of the sibilant parts in the clip gain. It's a little time consuming, but very effective. Two: using melodyne. In melodyne the sibilant parts of the vocal are separated, and are adjustable in a similar way to using clip gain. Even if you don't need any tuning, this feature is great. I find it really useful. If you overdo it and it gets lispy, you can go back and raise it a little to bring back more sibilance. Both methods take a little time, but not that much, and then you may need a slight use of a de-esser, or likely none at all. I highly recommend this approach, esp if you've had such a hard time with it Good luck :)
Coming back next month?
This was my first Fix the Mix, and I absolutely loved it, but have a question for the people who've gone before: why did you come back? Do you learn something different every month? Do you come to do the homework just to see how your skills have improved over the past month? Do you come because it's entertaining and/or fun? Do you come just because it allows you to interact with a community of like-minded artists? To those like me whose first FTM this was: are you coming back? Why/why not? I'm probably going to come back next month, but I'd been curious since day 1 of why people would do that, so I thought: why not just ask?

Hi All, I'm a first time FTMer, and I have learned SO much (and haven't even seen Day 3 yet). I loved the educational approach, and due to that I have learned lots that I am implementing into my mixing now. So I'll be back and for other stuff as well hopefully.
