Hi there!
New members here. Just returned from our first trip to Calabria. We stayed in the hills close to Caminia beach. Absolutely loved it! Had a rental car and visited small hillside towns and castles. Had some great dinners in tiny restaurants. One week was way too short. Coming back in autumn with 3 weeks in Scalea and 1 month in Puglia.
Sounds wonderful!! Where did you stay? We had a difficult time finding a place that didn't trigger my child's asthma so we ended up in a big hotel in Catanzaro.
Why Law 74?
Hello All: If you are aware of the ongoing issues with Law 74 Tajani Decree I wanted to get thoughts on my comments below. From what I am seeing based on my research, the reason for this was solely due to abuse leading to overloading the consulates, noting that the majority of abuse were people getting the citizenship and not living in Italy thus not intending a connection, rather, using the privledge for the benefits it provdes. While I do agree with reasoning to correct abuse, my thought on the resolution are as follows: If this is so, then wouldn't it have been much more straight forward and simple to just add mandatory criteria, such as, 1) Mandatory living in Italy requirements with scheduled check in's; 2) Mandatory language test. This would stop the vast majority of the abuse, as people would now have to live in Italy and have knowledge of language, thus, stopping the abuse of getting the citizenship just for the benefits. However, it appears that Antonio Tajani's decree that was passed looks more like a convaluted, complicated legal issue that the courts in Italy are still dealing with, over a year later. On April 14, 2026 the Italian Supreme Court will be hearing Law 74 relating to retroactivity and, the minor issue (I think). It actually now limits to two generations (parent and grandparent), so, at 11:55 pm on May 22, 2025 a person was an Italian Citizen via birthright; then 6 minutes later on May 23, 2025, they were not. I keep trying to research to find out more information on why it was done this way. Thoughts? Comments? Thank you.

Hi Deborah, The whole thing is just chaotic truthfully. I tried to apply here in America through the internet but that didn't work so I went to Italy, where my grandfather is from. They told me I can have citizenship and that I needed to apply formally. Well I did that several times and here I am back in America and it has been a whole year and nothing! It a good thing we didn't buy the home we were looking at! It's so sad because they want people to come and buy homes there and live yet they make it impossible for us to do that! So sad Italy has got to straighten things out.
@Pete Sobolev Yes. I went to the San Pietro Apostolo commune were they had all the papers on file of my grandfather AND the mayor has my last name even. What is an ERV?..and if I do that will I not have a chance at citizenship?

Ok.... I thought I would be the first to post about my love for Italy and my hopes and dreams... My name Is Laurie De Santis-Staschik. I am an American Italian. My grandmother was from Palermo,Sicily(She came over at 14 years old , by herself on a boat), my grandfather was from San Pietro Apostolo, Calabria(which is surely the most beautiful small town in all of Italy). I am trying to get citizenship because we thought for certain we would be living there. We planned to open a retreat as we are massage therapists and big meditators and yogis. I tried to get citizenship which went really well, I thought..up to a point. I found the records that showed that my grandfather never became an American officially, his birth, marriage and death were all on file there. I was told I could have citizenship but am still waiting for an appointment 1 year later. Now things have changed here in America for our family but I still have dreams of living half the time there and half the time in America where my 3 kids will be. I am sure it will all come together some how but for now I am kind of in limbo. It is so nice to have this connection. It will keep the dream alive and perchance I might make a few friends....The last thing I would like to say is that if you have Italian culture in your life and you come to Italy you may find, like I did, that in the USA that is a melting pot(which I personally love) you find that suddenly you feel more like you are understood and fit in.. in Italy! Te amo, te voglio bene Italy!
