Worm tower and castings
I have a worm tower with trays and my older tray is mostly castings very few bedding left. I added another tray and added food to the new tray thinking the worms would migrate up. Most of them have migrated up to feed which is great but it seems like there are still a good number of worms in the older tray. It is mostly castings and quite moist and i think they may be breeding there. I have only seen one cocoon but ive seen many juvenile worms when i fluff it up. My question is do i leave that tray alone and the worms will just all migrate up when they are done breeding? I fluff it once a week to keep it aerated. I have stopped adding any food to this tray because i want to collect the castings but the worms wont leave it. Any advice is welcome and thank you!

@Cherene Packard honestly i was worried they werent getting enough air so i was fluffing my casting bin and manually picking them out. But they keep going back there haha. They like it so i think i might just take some casting out, pull out any worms and let it dry and sift what i need as i need it. Thank you!!!

@Rick Redding it took me a few months as i am new. I had issues with string of pearls and gnats. It took me a few months of following cherene on instagram and watching her videos to figure out what i doing wrong and now they are MUCH happier. I still have some gnats but slowly getting better. No more string of pearls! I started making mixing my pulverized eggs shells with a little but of corn meal and they seem to love that as well. My worms seem to love the wetter tray to breed in as that is where im seeing all the babies! Im probably not looking close enough to see the cocoons.
Coffee grounds or castings?
Hi, how do you tell the difference between coffee grounds and castings? We drink a fair amount of coffee which i add to my bin so not sure how to tell the difference. Thank you!!

@Rick Redding Ive been putting less into my bins, trying to use it for precompost instead, but i was wondering with my older bin if it was castings or grinds. Ty!

Fungus Gnat Treatment
This is something I get asked about a lot! Dealing with fungus gnats is so annoying, but if you are consistent with breaking the life cycle, they will go away. Using BTI water as a preventative is a game changer, and when I get lazy with not doing it that's when the outbreaks start happening again haha Stay on top of it and you'll be glad you did! https://youtube.com/shorts/kWnl0ytPQHk?si=VlTezx4ZPj2nJejW

I can attest to being consistent. I skipped two days of BTI water and they came back in full force. Im starting all over again with sticky traps and daily BTI water.

@Nathalie Horrillo they are mosquito dunks soaked in water! The mosquito dunks release a bacteria that kills mosquito larvae/eggs and also fungus gnats eggs! I put some in a spray bottle with water and let it sit for a day and then use it to spray onto the worms. Doesnt hurt them or people and it kills the gnat eggs that are already laid.

Check out the classroom tab for a self paced learning system and utilize this community for learning and connecting! Instead of digging through endless comments and videos, I wanted one place where people could: -learn step by step -ask questions -connect with others -grow healthier plants from the soil up Feel free to introduce yourself in the comments! Tell us: - where you’re from - what worms you have (or want) - whether you’re brand new or experienced - what you’re hoping to learn I’ll keep building this space over time with videos, resources, discussions, and live support.
