Reading Recommendation: Duolingo's Machine Learning Model 'Birdbrain'
Hey, i came across a great read about the development of the Birdbrain model built for Duolingo. It explores what worked well, what didn't and why, lessons learned - the whole process from the AI engineering team. I particularly liked this because it takes you through the history of the Duolingo app from no ai to developing the Birdbrain system for personlised learning... discussing the business problems and engineering the right solution. There's one or two details that go a little over my head... but i need to learn more about neural networks so thats cool. Its a real world application i've enjoyed using and i don't often get to hear the engineering development story of these apps so it was an awesome read. I thought it would be great to share here. If you check it out, let me know your thoughts! https://spectrum.ieee.org/duolingo
How did you find your "branch" of tech?
My journey in tech started with a coding bootcamp focused around web development -> self teaching automation/cybersecurity -> internship for Cloud ops. I still haven't found what "branch" of tech that is what I truly enjoy. I'm curious if/how people have found something in tech that they love doing? Was it from a personal project, a new job opportunity, or complete random chance from universe that fell in your lap?

I think its an evolution. I started in graphic design and was irritated that everything was so subjective and realised i made a mistake, i preferred web development where its based on logical arguments. I had to start in web design, then moved into front-end (Angular.js) and into full stack to correct my path. I moved from company to company to learn more, figure out where i worked best and why. I was a bit fearless in trying everything - because i was older i think. But that helped. We use that experience to figure out what branch we'll do well in - as opposed to the one we thought we'd like. Feedback helps. I lacked mentorship and self-awareness which was an issue. It can enable a person to do all of this in a much better way so i'd recommend people try to get that when they can.

@Jarrod Van Doren 100% agree, me too 😊
What have you read this week?
My favorite article this week was: Gaining Years of Experience in a Few Months

I'm starting the book AI Engineering by Chip Huyen - it's coming well recommended

Also i read some articles by Lefteris Karageorgiou - they're AWS & cloud technology centered and also very beginner friendly. This is one about scalability and event driven architectures https://blog.thecloudengineers.com/p/unlocking-scalability-event-driven
do you think software development is viable long term
I went into cs mainly for problem solving, what was your main goal when going into the industry? Are you planning to work for a company or interested in entrepreneurship at all? Let me know and thanks for reading!

Yes but i don't believe software development is necessarily a wise choice if this is what you vision. Product or Programme Management may be better - once you've dedicated too many years to software dev its much more difficult to go into business for yourself or into entrepreneurship in my opinion. If this is your goal, i'd consider skipping the software dev, you can learn technology on your own time - i would focus career moves in areas where you can naturally work towards entreprenuership and get those opportunities. My experience is thats product/programme management or marketing.. business side as we call it.
Participation.
Hey all, I have been thinking about this for a while but I've decided to start removing people that haven't contributed to the community. Starting on Monday, I will be removing people who have been in the group for a month but haven't posted or commented on another post i.e. you've been here a while and are still level 1. I want everyone to give back to the community and not just take from it. What you give doesn't have to be much but some participation is required. As always, if you have questions let me know if the comments.
