Aging dogs and joint support
Its happening. Diva is struggling more and more with DJD in both elbows. We tried antinol, it gave her chronic sharts and made her miserable, so its back to hemp oil and a salmon based diet, P.E.A. plus from canine ceuticals as well as cartrophen injections every 4 weeks. We also have infra red laser treatments twice a week (have a unit at home) But lately relief is only lasting a week or two before she shows signs of pain 😢 This morning we took a 3km walk to the creek so she could swim, but Diva and "take it slow" isn't something she will do, so now despite her earlier joy shes struggling to get on the couch. (I dont do this often but she needed an outing) We have already cut out fetch, tug/bitework and anything that encourages hard running/sprinting which sadly are most of her favourite things to do. I've just ordered ramps for the house and car and all of her beds are memory foam. What else can I do to support her? Elbow replacement surgery is not an option as she won't rest enough to heal and it would only decrease her QOL. I will be asking about pain relief in addition to cartrophen at our next vet visit in 2 weeks. She is a very intense dog and trying to restrict her movement ends up with her vibrating in frustration and ending up putting more strain on herself unless sedated 😒 Video of her getting her swims in as its easier on her joints than running. She is only 7yo 🥺

There is nothing worse than seeing our spicy dogs unable to live their lives to their fullest potential. 😔 I had a kelpie that was on cartrophen injections for most of her life. She was then on Meloxicam (pain killer) for about 4/5 years before she died at 13 years old. Just be aware that the meloxicam can have an effect on their kidneys and liver. My girl had to have blood tests every 6-12 months to make sure her kidneys and liver were still functioning well. Swimming should be a good, no impact exercise. My girl always felt amazing after a swim. If she needs a little extra supervision maybe try finding someone who does hydrotherapy. It’s a real shame that antinol doesn’t agree with her, as it’s done wonders for my current kelpie. Have you tried just adding some green lipped muscles to her diet?

I totally understand the financial burden. I’m lucky enough to live by a lake so I just needed a ball to entice my girl to swim. As for the withholding period, I haven’t heard that. Mind you, I think by the time my girl went onto meloxicam she had switched from cartrophen to synovan instead. So she was on both until her 13th birthday, when I decided that nothing was helping anymore.

Great first episode Birdy. I can relate to a lot of this. As someone who has an overload of empathy, I love watching the interactions between kids and dogs. I think dogs have a great way of teaching kindness. I have watched a clients daughter take my kelpie while I worked with their dog. Her mum couldn’t believe the interaction she was seeing (for many reasons that I won’t go into). Just the calmness that Bim brought to the girl and mutual respect for each other was beautiful. I’m a big believer that kids should grow up with dogs to help teach them kindness and respect for others.

So I’m thinking of starting recording meditations for dog lovers…. Please tell me: -what would be worth your time listening to? - what would be helpful? - what is your experience with meditation? Thank you - have a lovely day 💛🙏

Perhaps a meditation for the owners of more challenging dogs. Something along Pat’s lines of still feeling gratitude, and helps us connect with them on a different level… I’m asking for a friend… 😬😂

Turbo at 3 weeks old (with one of his brothers trying to hide in my vest). This is the first and only time Turbo has fallen asleep on me. He’s now nearly 2 years old and we’re still learning how to relax and switch off in my presence. And I suppose you could say that he chose me. This was the second time I had met the pups and he was the first one to come to me and curl up for a nap. And I wasn’t even looking to get a puppy. I was just helping my friend who had them on foster to help “socialise” them (I just wanted puppy cuddles really 😂)

@Birdy O'Sheedy the universe has provided me with all of my dogs, and it's done a good job so far... although this one is challenging! 😅
