People Love Your Work! How's that for a theme this week?
A little Monday Memo to kick off your week! (7 min read) What had happened was, I visited one of my favorite wine rooms yesterday in the Bay Area. (The venue is on a retired naval base in Vallejo, CA, Mare Island proper. It is a converted Captain's Quarters mansion, old school architecture intact. A really cool spot you should visit if you're ever in town, Vino Godfather.). I entered and meandered through all the rooms looking for a quiet spot and found one in a small dining room, at a table for 8, where there were two other "winos" 😜 at the opposite end. I recognized the male. He was one of the two employees I see each time I visit. In the moment, his name escaped me. I said hello and as I maneuvered past them, the woman blurted, "Oh, hi! I remember you, you played your daughter's music that last time I was here that we listened to on the porch." I nodded yes, and said yes, and then asked if she could remind me of her name again, and I reminded her that mine was Wanda. We both exchanged a genuine, nice to see you again. And then I pointed to the chair I was looking at and shared that the other rooms were too busy but that looked like a quiet spot, to drop a subtle clue. The two of them politely did not impose with further conversation, and then they actually exited about 10 minutes after I opened my laptop. I was grateful and hoped I wasn't giving off a rudeness vibe, but I was also on task. Thirty minutes or so passes and I decided I wanted some cheese and crackers, and another round of the bubbly (their branded prosecco). When I went to the counter, the employee "Tim" yes, I remembered his name then, was behind the bar, and the woman "Maria" was standing opposite, next to her husband "James" whom she introduced as I approached, and also said, "I bought your book!" with that exclaimed excitement. I smiled puzzled because I hadn't said anything about it, and then she continued, "Tim told me all about it, and I love to read and support local artists." I said, "Oh...wow, wow Tim, thank you!" (I kinda forgot he had purchased it a few months ago, like it was not top of mind for me. It's a performance venue and our last brief conversations revolved around my daughter performing there). And then Tim chimed in to say, "I read it once, and listened to the audiobook twice. It's a great book, you aren't talking about it enough. You only talk about your daughter." Ooh, wow I said, "Guilty as charged. But, can you blame me?"
