ABA workshop and Q&A
I have recently been receiving a lot of questions about ABA and what my thoughts are on it. I know it’s a heated topic in the Autism community and wanted to provide my take. I’ll be dropping an ABA workshop next week and would love to include some of your questions. Put your questions in the comments and I’ll share the workshop with you. It’s so hard for any one to join live so I just plan on recording!

@Nancy Kokshoorn exactly, especially for young children, the support is in the connection and motivation, rewards aren’t needed (all the time) if your child is having fun, engaged and happy to be with you! I rely on social motivation which is still ABA, just need the provider that understands that…
Potty Training
Has anyone dealt with potty training regression? My 3.5 year old daughter was doing pretty well. She one day just decided she didn’t want to go on the potty anymore. She gets so hyperfocused on whatever she is doing it’s a struggle to even get her to use the potty. I’m at a loss.

@Lauren Lorenzi Thinking about some outside variables can be helpful, Sent a visual schedule- just a written one can be helpful- As she’s playing showing her the visual and a timer and her promise reinforcer- remember when the timer goes off, when you got potty you get to have (reward) the reward won’t be forever just to build more reinforcement for her leaving her fixation. Try using playful redirection, puppets oh look puppet Betty is on her way, she wants you to come too! When you remove the “demand” or authoritative tone, making it silly, no biggie, hurry quick quick!!! Sometimes that playful redirection helps!

@Lauren Lorenzi how is the potty going? There is one resource that I recommend to all families wanting to learn all things potty training, it’s the autism consultant on Instagram, she has a memebrhsip dedicated to potty training
Today I organized
One of the most impactful supports we can provide for ourselves and our kiddos is a clear visual space and accessible Lear ing environment, Autistic kids thrive on a clear, visual space and minimal clutter. This is one of the hardest things for me as a mom becuaee everything else just gets in the way. I chose 1 space, 1 space that supports our routines and independence. When this space is supported with all we need it’s less dysregulation on my nervous system and more independence for them. Is organizing your space easy or hard for you?

@Elizabeth Zapata were on the road to getting rid of a lot of stuff. We recently find that when toys are put away, we have better attention and more engagement with the toys we do have out. Not as hard to transition. So many advantages to simple visual space

A skill you and your child need to lear
Emotional regulation is a very big topic not only for autistic kids but adults as well! . We have learned so much in Early Childhood Development in how the adults need to be the safe space for emotions and feelings. They need to accept them, support by being the calm in their child’s storm and not punish by yelling, shaming, pushing down or belittling an emotion or a feeling. This can be hard Sometimes when OUR inner emotions trigger us. What’s a trigger you notice you have when it comes to your child’s behavior?
