Laid off at exactly 40
Hi everyone, I turned 40 last October and was laid off last week. I have never been without a job or school since I was 16 and this is a brand new experience for me. So I signed up on this community to listen to and learn from people in similar situations. I am still recovering from the initial trauma and have an existential fear of running out of money to support my family. How did you all handle the first few days?

Life is a Test. And sometimes Life with throws a “Reality Ball” at you to make you realise the impermanence of the illusion of - job security -. Nothing is forever. And although it is traumatic and scary at the start - these situations force you to reassess, “Who am I now?” “What do I actually want to do?” “Was my last job taking more time away from my family?” “What do I want?” “What’s best for my family?” A lot of people are living on auto-pilot. Day in, day out, everyday is the same. Days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months, months turn into years. And then it’s only by the time they reach approximately 50/60 (or retirement age) years when life finally quietens down, do they stop, reflect and contemplate the life they’ve been living. But by then, it’s too late to change their ways, and there’s no way to re-write the past once they find the - regrets -. 40 is still hella young when you think of the average life span of the human being, and for one who is in good health. The trauma in the beginning is rough (and believe me, I understand). But the CLARITY that comes out of it, when enough time has passed and you can now look back in retrospect? It is Life Changing. This is the reality majority of the people of the world (especially in the West & Asia (e.g. China/Taiwan/Japan/Korea) are living in: https://youtu.be/e9dZQelULDk?si=ujmRzziDI5bK9SE4 And they’re deep in the Illusion of the Rat Race. A lot of people wire their identity to their job and profession too. And so when their job or career is removed from them - that’s when the existential crisis hits -. “Who am I without this job”? Our jobs don’t define us. Our humanity and character does. So, do what you gotta do to make money to pay the bills, feed the family. And maybe go through recruitment agencies to help assist you finding work - so the pressure is not all on you. But in the meantime, take this season as a gift to be able to chill out and reassess your life and what you want. Focus on your health and fitness and the answers and opportunities will come.
The Transformative Power of Nothingness and the Singularity of Everything
I have now been in this VA hospital for six weeks and the poking and prodding hasn't ceased. My assessment and evaluation at this East Orange NJ Spinal Cord Injury/ Disease hub was over 5 days after I arrived. I just can't go back to my former home. Not accessible and won't be made accessible. I'm now fighting for VA disability and Social Security. I'm also writing while rehabilitating two major spinal surgeries over the past two years: https://www.nobigrush.com if you're interested in details. So, I have a February 1 deadline for my Social Security stack of paperwork nearly an inch thick (all of which I already filled out online) that I'm sure they gave me to frustrate me and grind me down to deny me benefits. Oh yeah, physical therapy and occupational therapy schedules are intense as well as doctors poking and prodding. Then I write to inspire others not to give up. That's a priority to me. But, I have to take care of the other things or I can't do what I love to do. Ughhh! Anyway, thanks for having me. Hear me rant on Medium. I'd love some criticism of my whining and boo-hooing.

Sensory Deprivation Tanks (Floating) will bring a lot of relief to your spine. “People Experiencing Chronic Pain: For individuals suffering from chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, or back pain, float tank therapy can provide relief. By removing the sensation of gravity, float tanks reduce the strain on joints and muscles, offering a natural form of pain management. Unlike other pain relief methods, float tank therapy is non-invasive and doesn’t rely on medications, making it a holistic option for those seeking long-term solutions for pain”. For me personally, I use it as a natural treatment to manage my Complex-PTSD. You can read more about through the recovery centre I go to here in Australia: https://lokahiwellness.com.au/the-ultimate-guide-to-float-tank-therapy/
Question regarding the focus statement of this group
I have a question for both Jason, as moderator, and for the other members of this Skool. I see that the 'focus statement' on the right says 'Freelancing, ghostwriting, and second-act careers that work.' Please excuse me, I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention. I posted 2-3 articles trying to help people who are struggling - the way I have struggled - to get a traditional job. But I guess that doesn't really fit with the focus statement, does it? However, was that a bad mistake? I guess what I am leading up to asking is: Should we focus on only freelancing, ghostwriting, and second act careers . . . or should we also try to help each other to apply for more, for lack of a better word, 'traditional' jobs? I can see pros and cons with both approaches. Please advise what you prefer. Thank you very much, John

There’s no more such thing as - job security - anymore. Whether traditional or “entrepreneurial”, nothing is a sure thing these days. I’ve relied solely on my networking skills in the past few years to get my foot in the door into anything - or to create opportunities. My strategy is building genuine and authentic relationships and then letting hope and faith take the lead. When you’re in alignment with your purpose - everything just falls into place organically.
Plaigiarizing a good point below re: online job boards, Part 1.
Dear Group: Someone had what I think is a really good point below that I did not think get enough attention. What if part of the problem is not the 'job market' generally? What if part of the problem is that online job boards have turned into traps - traps that Hoover up our time and effort? As I understand it, there may be 2-3 big problems with online job boards: #1. Some of these postings are for positions where the employer does not really want to hire, if not outright scams. #2. The remaining announcements get flooded with responses, often with unqualified people, within hours of posting. #3. There may be bots these days that automatically further flood such postings with responses. Actually, I am not sure whether this problem number #3 is more of a problem than #2. Put all these factors together, and hunting for a job on online job boards may become something more akin to playing the lottery. Are we de facto gambling for jobs instead of looking for them? But what to do about this situation? I hope to attempt some suggestions in my next post.

Yeap. I was told a lot of job advertisements are to make the company - appear - they’re in “demand” when they’re really not. It’s more to do with the illusory image that they are in demand to appease investors or what not. Then the scammer ones have your data (I.e. email) and blow up inbox with scam-mail. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Probably best to go through legitimate Recruitment agencies nowadays.
My Writing Looks Bot Generated
Here is an interesting situation, I wrote an Investment Summary of 10 pages after significant manual research. I have trained 2 LLMs to write in a specific style, which then helps me with proper grammar, word selection and layout. It got rejected today since it looks bot generated? Not sure what to think about this??

Maybe just use some wit and sarcasm and say, “This is the result of a skilled human writer. Human writers are used to train A.I to write. So I guess you need to ask yourself what aligns with your companies ethos. Would you prefer fake or authentic?”
